Overview
Eighty-six cubic centimeters more. That’s the dose Ducati injected into its Superquadro to move from 1199 to 1285 cc, and transform an already radical machine into something bordering on the unreasonable. The result is read in raw figures: 205 horsepower at 10,500 rpm, 144.6 Nm of torque at 8,750 rpm, all contained in 166.5 kilos dry weight. The Ducati 1299 Panigale S is not a cautious evolution. It’s a statement of intent.

The S version justifies its €26,390 price tag with equipment that leaves nothing to chance. Forged Marchesini wheels, the carbon fiber mudguard, the full LED lights: that’s the starting point. But the real argument is hidden at either end of the aluminum monocoque frame, this structural chassis that serves as a riding cell. The 43 mm Öhlins NIX30 fork with TiN treatment and the TTX36 rear shock are not simply premium components bolted on to justify the price. They communicate. The SMART EC system adjusts compression and rebound in real time according to two logics: a fixed setting defined by the rider, or a semi-active mode where sensors read the road and react before the arms even feel it. Facing a Yamaha R1M or a BMW S 1000 RR from the same era, the Ducati 1299 Panigale S technical specifications place the bar very high in this electronic terrain.
Let’s talk about what this electronic platform actually hides. The Bosch 9MP ABS acts via Brembo M50 radial calipers, dual floating front discs, and integrates deceleration management in corners thanks to the IMU. The traction control DTC adjusts on eight levels. The bidirectional DQS quickshifter allows gear changes without a clutch, both up and down. The anti-wheelie control DWC also has eight levels. Three riding modes structure the whole thing: Race delivers the 205 horsepower unfiltered with minimal assistance, Sport doses the power for intense road use, Wet reduces the power to 120 horsepower and maximizes all safety nets. A fourth customizable mode allows each parameter to be refined individually. For track riders who want to analyze their sessions, the DDA+ GPS is available as an option.
What distinguishes the Panigale from its direct competitors also lies in its construction philosophy. The engine is stressed, bolted directly under the monocoque cell which serves as an airbox and a frame. The rake of 24 degrees, slightly reduced compared to the 1199, stiffens the steering and reinforces precision on corner entry. A short wheelbase of 1,437 mm and a rear tire of 200/55-ZR17 complete the picture of a machine tailored for the track, even if the road is not excluded for those who possess the required technical background.
Its displacement of 1285 cc disqualifies it from the Superbike championship in favor of the Panigale R. This is not a loss of prestige, it’s simply another definition of the playing field. The Ducati 1299 Panigale S with its 205 hp doesn’t need a homologated circuit to exist. It needs a rider capable of assuming what he holds in his hands. At €26,390 new, the Ducati 1299 Panigale S price may seem high; on the Ducati 1299 Panigale S used market, well-maintained examples maintain a solid rating, a sign that the market understands what this machine represents. It’s not the most accessible motorcycle in its segment, nor the easiest to live with on a daily basis. It’s a Panigale S. It doesn’t pretend.
