Overview
When Bologna decides to settle the score with the GSX-R and CBR, the result is the Ducati 1098 S. Not a simple cosmetic evolution, but a machine built with a precise objective: to dominate on track while remaining street-legal. The 2007 S version leaves the engine untouched, instead targeting something more fundamental — turning an already formidable sportbike into a surgical precision weapon.

The work starts with the suspension, and Ducati holds nothing back. Up front, a fully adjustable 43 mm Öhlins inverted fork with 120 mm of travel, featuring TIN-coated tubes to reduce friction. At the rear, an Öhlins monoshock handles the connection between the steel trellis frame and the swingarm with 127 mm of travel. A steering damper rounds out the package, neutralizing front-end reactions on fast corner exits. This is competition-spec hardware fitted as standard — the kind of equipment other manufacturers reserve for their limited editions or aftermarket kits.
The reduction of unsprung mass follows the same logic. Marchesini forged wheels replace the stock items, stripping 1.9 kg from the overall package. The front fender is carbon fiber. The result of this targeted weight-loss program: 171 kg dry, a figure that made virtually all the competition envious in 2007. Compared to an R1 or a 1000 RR of the same era, the Ducati 1098 S specs sheet shows an undeniable weight advantage, without any compromise on frame rigidity.
The 1099 cc L-twin, dubbed the Testastretta Evoluzione, produces 160 hp at 9,750 rpm and 122.6 Nm at 8,000 rpm with a 12.5:1 compression ratio. A generous 104 mm bore paired with a short 64.7 mm stroke, four valves per cylinder, six-speed gearbox. This engine is identical to the one in the standard version, with Ducati reserving its mechanical upgrades for the R variant. On this point, one can legitimately lament the absence of specific refinements to the valve train or fuel injection to justify the price gap. But on balance, the chassis specification more than compensates. The claimed top speed exceeds 300 km/h, placing the 1098 S in a segment where few machines dared to venture at the time.
At €21,195 at launch, the Ducati 1098 S price was clearly positioned at the upper end of the production sportbike spectrum. Today, a well-maintained used Ducati 1098 S can be negotiated at a significantly more accessible price point, making it a serious option for the seasoned track rider seeking genuine thrills without resorting to a recent Panigale. This is not a bike for beginners: the 820 mm seat height and the temperament of the L-twin demand solid experience. But for those who know how to read it, the 2007 Ducati 1098 S remains a benchmark of the Italian sportbike, a pivotal moment before the Panigale took over with a radically different architecture.
