Overview
When fashion invades the garage, one can rightfully be wary. Collaborations between clothing brands and motorcycle manufacturers have often resulted in cosmetic projects lacking soul, mere repositioned decals, and a flowery press release. The collaboration between Gant Rugger and BMW Motorrad breaks with this sad track record, because it starts from a genuine stylistic coherence and results in something concrete, rare, and frankly desirable.

The starting point is the BMW R nineT Scrambler, a machine that doesn't need a guardian to get noticed. Under the 18-liter tank beats a flat-twin engine of 1170 cc developing 110 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 118.7 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. These figures, carried by a steel trellis frame with engine carrier and a cardan drive, define a motorcycle that plays in the same league as the Ducati Scrambler 1100 or the Triumph Scrambler 1200, but with an immediately recognizable boxer character. The seat height of 785 mm remains accessible for an average build, and the 222 kg when fully fueled weighs no more than the competition in this segment. For those who wonder how many horsepower the BMW R nineT Scrambler has, the answer lies in a sober but sufficient figure for 200 km/h top speed.
The "Brooklyn Scrambler inspired by Gant Rugger" version pushes this base in an openly cultural direction. Only six copies, hand-assembled in the Toulouse workshops of Boxer Design. The exclusive "Denim Grey" hue dresses the flanks, a quilted leather seat replaces the standard one, and Continental TKC 80 tires with knobs recall that the word "scrambler" is not just a marketing label. LED turn signals, black anodized aluminum mirrors, and a headlight grille complete a refined picture, far from simple restyling. Here, every deviation from the standard model responds to a coherent logic, half-urban, half-adventurous, like Brooklyn itself. The BMW R nineT Scrambler custom rarely reaches this level of finish on such a limited series.
Should this collaboration be seen as a collector's item or a motorcycle in its own right? Both, without hesitation. Marketed in June 2014 at a price of 18,500 euros in a handful of BMW Motorrad dealerships, this limited series clearly targets a buyer who doesn't choose a motorcycle solely based on specifications. The typical profile is the cultured urban rider, sensitive to style as much as the intake noise of a flat-twin, one who finds the Harley-Davidson too heavy with symbols and the Japanese neo-retro too cold. On the BMW R nineT Scrambler used market, these copies are now negotiated well above their starting value, which says something about their status.
The real feat of this operation lies in its coherence. Gant Rugger didn't slap its logo on a fender and call it a collab. The brand rethought the machine in its details, provided a matching collector's parka, and delivered an object that tells a story without needing to shout it. For the BMW R nineT Scrambler in series production version, the same philosophy applies, on a larger production scale. Perhaps this is the most revealing sign of the success of the exercise: the BMW R nineT Scrambler standard, with its 18,500 euros list price at the time, doesn't need this special edition to exist. But this special edition offers it an extra moment of grace.
