Overview
This round headlight, you wouldn’t dare change it on the Bonnie. Yet, Triumph dares to do so, without detracting from its character. The shape remains the same but it features a new daytime running light signature and redesigned LEDs. This preface introduces the 2026 improvements to the 1200 Bonneville: - A USB-C port - An inertial measurement unit, making traction control and cornering ABS reactive - The possibility of an A2 restriction.
The English manufacturer also announces that cruise control is now standard equipment... Strange, it has been the case since early 2021. The T120 had installed it as standard equipment when it passed Euro5.
The evolution of the time began with a satin finish on its mechanical environment, and then it was discovered that the 1200 Bonneville had adapted to current standards. No impact on power and torque values, but an announced increase in responsiveness. An optimized clutch and balance shafts, a lightened crankshaft, and recalibrated riding Modes will give more pep to the big English twin.
At Hinckley, they seem to be generous with an improved Brembo braking system and the standard installation of cruise control (we’re coming back to that); but... There’s no forgetting the disappearance of the center stand, the passenger grab handle, and the heated grips for the rider. With these elements gone, we understand why the Bonneville has lost weight. The other reason is the presence of new aluminum rims. Consequently, the T 120 mkII loses 7 kilos, a series of equipment... but this doesn’t prevent it from increasing its price. An update whose outcome remains a taste of steel, as the Bonneville knows how to distill it.
Triumph understood a long time ago that for a brand, cultivating its history can forge enthusiasm. Vintage is trendy, while the English brand offers a revival, the Bonneville, an emblem of its past, for 20 years. From the first 800 Bonnie in 2001 to its latest versions in 865 cm3 (T 100, Thruxton, America, Speedmaster, Scrambler, special series...), this motorcycle provokes a very traditional and timeless attraction in all enthusiasts and novices. Its main defect was the limited performance of its parallel-twin engine. Because sometimes, charm is not enough to enjoy yourself. You want response, force, something that lifts your heart when you turn the throttle. Now, with its 1200 cm3 engine, the Bonneville T 120 can distribute muscle and sensations of a higher caliber.
Why T 120? To pay homage to the 1959 model, capable at the time of reaching 120 miles/hour, or 193 km/h. Not bad for a 47 horsepower twin, spinning a 4-speed gearbox. More than half a century later, the time has come for the Bonneville to show its strength, watts, and above all, torque to shake your ribcage. That's the mission of the 1200 cm3 engine. An engine designed to offer a full, consistent feel without seeking out high revs. With its fins, it looks very classic, but it is modern and will surprise many people with its technology. You don't see it right away, but the large radiator betrays water cooling. The first on a Bonneville, and a guarantee of power, reliability, and compliance with standards. 8 valves are in the cylinder head and ensure the breathing of an engine with a 270° firing order to give it character. A 6-speed gearbox combines power, just like a Ride-by-Wire throttle. And now, the smile and the heartbeat can race: this engine develops more than 10 mkg of torque. 10.7 mkg at 3500 rpm. A striking difference from the 865 cm3. This represents a 54% gain, and another way of seeing the road on a Bonneville. Power, a more relative notion on this type of machine, is established at 80 horsepower. A custom-style output, but already enough to respond with enthusiasm to the demands of the road.
The ultra-classic English bike has decided not to be just the icon of values from the past. Injection and eradication of oil leaks are no longer enough. The Bonneville 1200 T 120 is now electronic escapades from circuits. Now, riding a Triumph Classic is done through a choice of two injection maps, Road or Rain, and the assistance of traction control. There is even an anti-bribbling clutch for more comfort and to calm down engine torque. ABS is standard, as is a coded key immobilizer and a USB port under the seat to recharge smartphones and other trinkets. The functions of the dashboard are controlled on the handlebars and the seat announces more comfort. The riding position should satisfy everyone, with the natural and relaxed feel typical of this type of machine.
Need a neo impression in this retro? Although the speedometer has retained the same very vintage shape, the interior mixes the so british and the modern. The roller trips have disappeared in favor of small digital windows, in which are displayed the riding mode, the gear engaged, a double trip, the clock, the total mileage, the deactivation of ABS and traction control, the maintenance indicator, and information on fuel (average and instantaneous consumption, level and range). We will also note the elegant calligraphy of the meters, with as a bonus the double indication of speed, in miles and in km/h.
Yet, it is difficult to see that so many things have changed on this Bonneville. Put an 865 and a 1200 in the same yard and it will be difficult to distinguish one from the other at first glance. With a little more observation, you can see that the T 120 is more substantial, more premium, gives more majesty. This also comes from the details that run through the machine. The badges with bronze on the aluminum cases, the chrome parts, the serious front end with its two brake discs. And we find those little moments full of charm, such as the spoked rims, the deep-sounding sausage silencers, the long and flat seat, the hand-painted stripes, and to flatter the hipsters and swaggers, the injection system is still camouflaged by an imitation of carburetors.
More power, more pretension, more technology... you need a matching chassis to handle that. We remain in the steel tubular double cradle style but Triumph adapts it to the constraints and modifies the suspension to improve handling. With its dual disc at the front and its cornering ABS, the 1200 Bonneville should offer much better decelerations.
Triumph still offers a large stock of accessories to enhance the Bonnie. More than a hundred references invite you to season the English bike, with more or less utility.
