Overview

When Munich decides to play in the big leagues of custom bikes, the result doesn't weigh 345 kilograms by chance. The 2025 BMW R 18 has received a discreet but targeted refresh: new spoke wheels replacing the original ones, the rear wheel now 18 inches, reworked fenders, redesigned mufflers that better clear the exposed cardan shaft, and a front fork finally free of its fairing. The overall look gains visual clarity. The rear shock has also been revised to refine comfort. And the Euro5+ homologation has had a pleasant side effect: the 1,802 cm3 flat-twin gains an additional 5 Nm, peaking at 162.7 Nm at 3,000 rpm. We’ve no complaints about that.

BMW R 18

This flat-twin boxer is the largest BMW has ever produced, across all categories. 1,802 cm3, a bore of 107 mm for a stroke of 100 mm, and exposed overhead valves that put on a show above the cylinders as if it were 1955. BMW has deliberately abandoned its own modern technologies, no ShiftCam, no liquid cooling, camshafts housed in the lower engine block. The engine displays a resolutely retro philosophy in its design, while incorporating 4 valves per cylinder, electronic injection, and a slip control system during downshifts. This mix of old gestures and contemporary safeguards is exactly what Milwaukee has been doing for decades. BMW has understood this well, even if the official communication insists on the lineage with the R5 of 1936. The aesthetic kinship exists, but the primary inspiration comes more from the bison of the Midwest.

Facing a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy or an Indian Chief, the BMW R 18 positions itself with comparable arguments: similar displacement, 91 hp at 4,750 rpm, massive torque available from low revs, and a price of €20,866 that is fully integrated into the premium segment. The Bavarian difference lies in the cardan shaft transmission, the manufacturing quality stamped Berlin-Spandau, and an onboard electronics package that American bikes offer less generously as standard. Keyless Ride, the disengageable stability control ASC, the MSR torque correction, and three driving modes simply named Rain, Rock and Roll are delivered as standard. The announced range of 290 km with 16 liters of gasoline remains honest for a cruiser of this size.

BMW R 18

The steel double cradle chassis hides a mono-shock absorber under the seat, taking the recipe from the Softail or Triumph Speedmaster: the rear seems rigid, it is not. The seat at 719 mm from the ground remains accessible, the feet fall vertically rather than forward, which distinguishes the R 18 from the typically American posture. The wheelbase of 1,730 mm and the weight of 345 kilograms demand respect in maneuvers, to say the least. The optional electric reverse gear is a necessary luxury for anyone parking this armored vehicle on a slope. The four-piston brakes with ABS have the serious responsibility of immobilizing all this steel, and they do so correctly.

BMW R 18

The BMW R 18 Classic is aimed at an audience that knows what it wants: presence, raw mechanical character, extensive personalization via a prolific accessories catalog. It can be restricted to 35 kW for A2 licenses, but that would be equipping a semi-trailer with a Twingo engine. The natural profile of this machine is the experienced motorcyclist who wants a European cruiser built seriously, without relying on transatlantic imports. For that audience, the BMW R 18 B and its variations constitute a coherent offer. For novices attracted by the bearing, it is better to start elsewhere and come back when the arms have grown.
