Overview
When BMW decides to play in the big leagues of American cruisers, the brand doesn't do things halfway. The BMW R 18 arrives with 1,802 cm3 under the tank, making it the largest boxer engine ever built by Munich, across all categories. That figure doesn't lie: we're talking about a flat twin with a bore of 107 mm and a stroke of 100 mm, dimensions that evoke the factories of Milwaukee more than the workshops of Berlin-Spandau. The displayed homage to the 1936 R5 is nice on paper, but let's be honest: it was at Harley-Davidson and Indian that the BMW R 18 went to find its deep inspiration.

This boxer delivers 91 hp at 4,750 rpm, but power isn't the point. The point is this torque of 157 Nm available from 3,000 rpm, with more than 150 Nm accessible over a wide range between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. On the road, this translates to a muted and continuous surge, without nervous spikes, without needing to work the six-speed gearbox. The shaft drive does the rest silently. This engine has deliberately turned its back on modern technologies: no ShiftCam, no liquid cooling, exposed camshafts like on a 1950s block. But behind this retro facade, we find four valves per cylinder, an electronically controlled injection system, and an anti-dribble system that protects the rear wheel during hard downshifts. The past at the service of the present, provided you accept the approach.
The steel double cradle chassis hides its central shock absorber under the seat, like a Softail from Milwaukee or a Triumph Bobber. The 49 mm telescopic fork is imposing, non-adjustable, and the 19 and 16 inch spoked wheels were a stylistic certainty. What is less certain is the wheelbase of 1,730 mm and the steering geometry that makes urban half-turns frankly laborious. With 345 kg fully fueled and a seat 691 mm from the ground, handling requires respect. The double front discs with four-piston calipers and ABS have the heavy task of immobilizing this mass, and they do so correctly. BMW has limited the speed to 178 km/h; no one buys a cruiser of this size to tickle the 200 km/h on the highway.

On board, technology catches up with the vintage aesthetics. Keyless Ride unlocks the ignition without searching for a barrel. Three riding modes called Rain, Rock and Roll pilot the throttle response and the ASC stability control. The 16-liter tank promises approximately 290 km of range according to conditions. As an option, there is an electric reverse gear which, on a motorcycle of this weight, quickly goes from gadget to a real selling argument. Accessories are numerous: Bobber kits, Apehanger, Machined to personalize the line according to taste, with partners like Roland Sands or Vance & Hines enriching the catalog. It's thought out like with an American manufacturer, with a consistency that BMW knows how to bring.

The question that often comes up concerns sales: why is the BMW R 18 selling poorly compared to a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy or an Indian Chief? The answer is in the price. At 21,590 euros in standard version, the R 18 settles into a segment where brand loyalty counts as much as technology. American custom enthusiasts often remain in the stable they know, and BMW fans hesitate in front of a profile so far from their usual culture. This is the paradox of this motorcycle: too German for purists of the V-twin American, too atypical for regulars of the GS or the RT. Yet, for those who want a solid, well-built cruiser, with an infallible shaft drive and modern electronics hidden behind period shapes, the BMW R 18 classic remains a serious proposition. A unique object, which deserves better than the indifference it sometimes collects.
