Overview
Munich had long looked at American customs from afar, with that mixture of fascination and polite disdain that Bavarians reserve for things they don’t yet manufacture. When the BMW R 18 arrived in 2020, it was as much a declaration of war as a declaration of love, not to Harley-Davidson directly, but to everything the custom represents: weight, chrome, torque, ritual. To enter this world, BMW brought out its most massive argument, literally. The 1,802 cm³ boxer twin engine is the largest the brand has ever built. No one there had pushed displacement so far. At 3,000 rpm, the 157.9 Nm of torque is already there, fully available, without needing to force the revs. At 4,750 rpm, the 91 horsepower completes the picture. On paper, it’s solid.

What you notice when approaching the beast is first and foremost this engine that occupies all the visual space. It overflows, it imposes, it breathes heavily before you’ve even started it. The pushrods are visible above the cylinders, staged like industrial jewels. No ShiftCam, no liquid cooling, no overhead camshafts. BMW made the opposite choice of hidden sophistication: here, the mechanics are on display. The distribution by central camshafts actuating OHV pushrods is an assumed vintage philosophy, compensated by 4 valves per cylinder, electronic injection and a switchable traction control system. One foot in 1936, the other in the present. This mix works visually, even if purists on both sides will find fault.
At 345 kg when fully fueled, the BMW R 18 is not easily forgotten in maneuvers. BMW has included an electric reverse gear as an option, which says a lot about the frankness of the approach. The wheelbase of 1,731 mm and the rake of 32.7 degrees make it a machine that negotiates city turns like a cargo ship on a river port. The 690 mm seat remains accessible, the feet fall vertically, unlike American customs that push the footpegs far forward. This is a sharp ergonomic choice that differentiates the R 18 from a Harley Softail or an Indian Chief, and that will appeal to riders accustomed to the European position. The 49 mm fork, the hidden monoshock under the seat and the three 300 mm discs with 4-piston calipers at the front constitute an honest chassis, without any possible adjustments on the fork, which would have been welcome on a machine priced at 22,990 euros.

The cockpit holds a small surprise: no ignition barrel. The Keyless Ride system unlocks the steering and ignition as the owner approaches. Three riding modes respond to the names of Rain, Rock and Roll, names that betray a fairly successful effort at relaxed communication. Rain softens the throttle and recalibrates the ASC for wet conditions; Rock releases the acceleration and tolerates more slip; Roll seeks the optimal balance in all conditions. The 16-liter tank promises 290 km of range according to the manufacturer, reasonable for a cruiser of this size. In terms of personalization, BMW has opened the configurator bmw r 18 and partnered with names like Roland Sands or Vance & Hines to offer bobber, apehanger or machined kits that transform the standard look into something more radical.

The BMW R 18 is aimed at a specific audience: the mature, knowledgeable motorcyclist who wants a custom without crossing the Atlantic to go get his motorcycle. It is neither a machine for beginners, nor for track riders. It is a posture and low-speed sensation motorcycle, built in Berlin-Spandau with the usual German rigor, proudly bearing its "Berlin built" inscriptions. Whether the recipe will convince the die-hard fans of Milwaukee is another matter. But as a mechanical statement of intent, the 1,802 cm³ Big Boxer speaks loudly enough to be heard on both sides of the Atlantic.
