Overview

In 2025, the majestic 1800 twin received Euro5+ compliance but also a 5 Nm torque boost. A welcome addition to its now substantial 163 Nm of torque, but always good to have. Even more torque to propel this astonishing machine.

When BMW returned to the custom sector, it didn't introduce a new model but a true platform. The R18 made a strong impression, establishing itself as a powerful, heavy, noble cruiser, with an engine as large as the category demands.

Then, we expand. That’s Harley’s technique: creating 20 different motorcycles around the same engine. BMW hasn’s reached that stage yet, preferring to advance progressively and currently focusing on touring. The R 18 B wants to play a tactical card by adopting a bagger style, with more road-going pretensions than the R 18 Classic. But not too much, to retain a certain dynamism.

This German touring custom is dressed with more enveloping fenders, a longer and higher seat (720 mm from the ground), spoked wheels, a black engine finish, and striking design cues to taunt the competition. With its Batwing-style headlamp and 27-liter hard saddlebags, the R 18 B instinctively shows its purpose and target: the indomitable Street Glide and, to a lesser extent, the Indian Chieftain. The arguments are the same: protection for the torso and hands, a not-too-large windshield, some luggage capacity, a more comfortable seat than a cruiser’s, and above all, a large twin. Except that on the German model, it’s horizontally opposed.

No changes to report for the Big Boxer. Imposing like an aircraft engine, this 1802 cm3 entity retains identical specifications for the entire family. Its torque reaches 16.6 mkg at mid-range and delivers more than 15 mkg between 2000 and 4000 rpm, which is the most frequently used range – providing a deep and muscular thrust to this large steel cruiser. The 91 horsepower quantify the maximum power at 4750 rpm, but this value is less striking than the “grunt” inherent in the displacement and design.

The engine will have to “yield” a bit in performance due to the added weight. The R 18 B must operate with an additional 53 kg of weight compared to the original custom. Yes, the fairing, saddlebags, and equipment weigh a lot. The extra fuel also. The machine needs to be able to cover long distances, so it needs to carry more gasoline. The tank here is 24 liters, 8 more than the R 18.

The chassis has also been modified. The wheelbase is 36 mm shorter, the rear suspension offers an additional 30 mm of travel, the rake increases from 150 to 183.5 mm, the steering angle widens from 57.3 to 62.7°. No suspension adjustments... at least for the rider. The manufacturer ensures that the crew rides without asking questions, while the preload adjusts automatically. Furthermore, an automatic load compensation system on the rear allows you to carry whatever you want without questioning the damper settings. Other components are common to other Bavarian models. A large 49 mm inverted fork, three 300 mm brake discs with four-piston calipers, tires of size 120/70-19 at the front and 180/65-16 at the rear, rear suspension hidden under the seat, and the attractive exposed cardan drive.

Comfort takes another dimension here, with wider footpegs, standard heated grips, a Marshall audio system integrated into the fairing, Keyless Ride technology, and a Star Trek-style welcome at the cockpit. One cannot deny a certain talent and serious reflection when seeing the successful marriage between the old American car-style analog gauges, the almost techno lighting, and the massive TFT multimedia screen. A 26 cm screen, almost as wide as a sheet of A4, capable of displaying GPS navigation, all onboard information, phone pairing, radio... Its format commands respect and is conceived given the standing of the motorcycle, but... it appears oversized compared to the function. This high-tech module does not eliminate the four main gauges, indicating fuel quantity, speed, engine speed, and, a very rare and very chic feature, available power reserve. A "favorites" button appears for faster access to certain functions.

Flirting with endless roads, the cabochard greeting, the full-relax feet with the supports above the cylinders (optional), the Boxer’s rhythm... all contribute to leaving the smartphone outside a good cruising bubble. BMW has just installed a glove box... for the smartphone on top of the tank; ventilated and equipped with a USB port. Once this electronics is enclosed, the rider has nothing more to do than let himself be carried away by its driving. Itself strongly infused with silicon. The R 18 B can be composed of three riding Modes (Rock – Roll – Rain), prevent some tumbles thanks to the ASC traction control, retain engine braking kicks with the MSR engine braking regulation, prevent rescuers via the intelligent emergency call – then by adding a few options, it can facilitate maneuvers with a reverse gear and the Hill Start Control (for hill starts), illuminate in curves, equip itself with adaptive cruise control premiered on the latest R 1250 RT, or even make itself available for young riders thanks to the A2 restriction.

Options also allow (especially?) to personalize the R 18 Bagger even further. In any case, a custom without its personal touch through a catalog is almost unimaginable. There is a beautiful psychedelic Galaxy Dust paint, a whole host of Option 719 parts, others created with Roland Sands Design, two higher levels of sound capable of spitting out up to 280 watts and amputating a little the capacity of the saddlebags, valve covers, rims, engine covers, windscreens... and a First Edition pack for market launch. As with the first R18, this densifies the heritage aspect with white stripes on the black paint, lots of chrome, First Edition badges, and topstitching on the seat.

Note a little peculiarity. While Americans like the driver's feet to be placed forward, as if preceding the engine, the German prefers a more standard position. With legs at right angles and knees behind the cylinders.

Perhaps you would be tempted by a Tourer even more highways? BMW has foreseen this and offers a more long-distance version of its R18 with the Transcontinental variant. More protection, more luggage capacity, more style, more comfort, more dollars.... pardon, euros. A data that the customer looks at differently for this category of machines.
