Overview
A 1802 cm3 Boxer engine nestled between two spoked wheels, a batwing fairing slicing through highway winds, and 27-liter rigid saddlebags bolted to the flanks. The BMW R 18 B doesn’t seek to appear as anything other than what it is: a direct assault on the premium bagger market, the one that Harley-Davidson has held for decades with its Street Glide, and that Indian nibbles at with its Chieftain. Munich has decided to join the dance, in its own way, with its own mechanical logic.

The engine is the same as on the entire R18 family. This flathead Big Boxer develops 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm, but the maximum power is almost anecdotal here. What matters is the torque. 157 Nm available from 3000 rpm, a very wide operating range between 2000 and 4000 rpm, and that feeling of deep traction that only a large naturally aspirated displacement can provide. You don't ride this engine, you let it breathe. The downside is known: the weight. With 397 kg fully fueled and a 24-liter tank to ensure range on the road, the BMW R 18 B weighs 53 kg more than the base custom. The fairing, the equipment, the saddlebags: everything adds up. The maximum speed of 178 km/h reflects this consented plumpness.
BMW reworked the chassis to absorb the difference. The wheelbase was shortened by 36 mm compared to the standard R18, the rake increased, the steering angle opened. The result is a motorcycle that remains manageable for its category, even if low-speed maneuvers require anticipation. The suspensions manage their preload according to the load, without driver intervention. For a grand touring, this is a consistent approach. The 49 mm fork, the three 300 mm discs with four-piston calipers and ABS do the rest.

On board, the cockpit mixes instrumentation in the style of American sixties automobiles and a 26 cm TFT screen capable of displaying GPS, radio, on-board information and phone connection. The screen is imposing, almost too large for a motorcycle that claims a certain stylistic sobriety. Heated grips, the Marshall audio system, keyless start and the Rock, Roll and Rain riding modes are part of the standard equipment. Available options include reverse gear, adaptive cruise control, cornering light and A2 restriction. A BMW R 18 B accessory catalog then joins for customization enthusiasts, with Option 719 parts, Roland Sands Design collaborations, audio systems up to 280 watts and an infinity of chrome or black finishes.

What distinguishes the R18 B from its American rivals is also the riding position. The legs remain straight, knees behind the cylinders, rather than stretched forward in the American style. This choice changes the feel, gives a feeling of more direct control, and will appeal to European riders who balk at riding with their feet in the air. The target is clear: the experienced grand tourer, who travels regularly over long distances, who wants comfort without sacrificing style, and who is willing to put 28190 euros on the table. The BMW R 18 B price positions the machine in a category where American competition is less expensive for equivalent equipment. Harley and Indian know it, and play on their heritage. BMW plays on German precision and embedded technology. It's not the same selling point, but it's a selling point that finds its audience.
