Overview

Imagine a 1802 cm3 flat-twin engine nestled between two spoked wheels, framed by a Batwing fairing and flanked by 27-liter rigid panniers. The question isn’t whether the BMW R 18 B is intimidating. It is. The real question is whether Munich has managed to build a credible bagger against the mastodons of Milwaukee and Springfield.

BMW R 18 B

The answer is yes, but with nuances. BMW hasn't invented the formula: take an iconic engine, decline a whole range around it, let the BMW R 18 B accessories do the rest of the customization work. Harley-Davidson has been practicing this art for decades. The Bavarians are trying their hand at it with method, starting by seating the R18 platform on its foundations, then progressively grafting touring equipment. The R 18 B occupies the middle of this emerging range: more touring-oriented than the original cruiser, less restrictive than the Transcontinental. A tactical, consistent positioning on paper.

What immediately strikes you is the torque. 157 Nm available from 3000 rpm on the 2025 version, 5 Nm more than the previous generation after Euro5+ compliance. On an engine of this architecture, the peak power figure, 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm, counts less than this blanket of torque that spreads between 2000 and 4000 rpm. That's where the Boxer lives, that's where it propels its 397 kilos with a quiet conviction. The maximum speed of 178 km/h is not the point. The point is this feeling of a powerful conveyor belt under the wheels, this ability to swallow up the kilometers without ever seeming to exert effort.

The price of this mechanical generosity is weight. 53 kilos more than the base R 18, compensated by a tank increased to 23.85 liters to last the distance. The chassis has been revised accordingly: wheelbase slightly shortened to preserve maneuverability, rear suspension travel increased, steering angle widened. The suspensions automatically adjust according to the load, which avoids the rider having to take out the manual with each change of passenger or luggage. BMW has done the groundwork, and it shows. The 49 mm fork, the three 300 mm discs with four-piston calipers, the shaft drive: all this forms a solid assembly, without suspicious compromises.

BMW R 18 B

The cockpit deserves attention. The 719 mm seat offers reasonable access for this category, heated grips are standard, and a 10-inch TFT screen dominates a dashboard that combines americana-style analog dials with connected technology. The result is readable, consistent, even if the screen seems slightly oversized for actual use on board. The storage provided for the phone above the tank, ventilated and equipped with a USB port, well summarizes the philosophy of the machine: everything to make the rider think about the road, not about logistics. The three Rock, Roll and Rain riding modes, the ASC traction control, the MSR engine braking regulation, the optional reverse gear: the electronics are there, discreet, without ever parasitizing the raw character of the Boxer.

BMW R 18 B

Facing the Street Glide or the Indian Chieftain, the BMW R 18 B defends its place with solid arguments: an atypical flat-twin engine, flawless German finish, and a catalog of accessories and options that allows you to build your personal version with strokes of Option 719 or Roland Sands Design parts. The BMW R 18 B price, displayed at 27,760 euros, clearly positions the machine in the European premium segment. It's not cheap, but the clientele interested in this type of machine is not looking for the best value for money. They are looking for a statement. And in this area, Munich delivers something convincing.
