Overview

Who still remembers sport-tourers? In a market dominated by fully-loaded adventure bikes and touchscreen-equipped hypersports, the 2021 BMW R 1250 RS stands as a holdout. A direct heir to the R 1200 RS, it carries on a vision of motorcycling that many thought was dead and gone: that of fast travel, of miles devoured with relish, torso leaning slightly forward behind a fairing that cuts through the air without turning you into a TT racer. On paper, the BMW R 1250 RS's spec sheet speaks for itself. Beneath the fairing beats the 1254 cc flat-twin, fed by ShiftCam technology that gives it variable valve timing worthy of the finest automotive engines. The result: 136 horsepower at 7750 rpm and, more importantly, 143 Nm of torque from just 6250 rpm, with remarkable availability across the entire rev range. This split-personality boxer can be docile in the city and fierce on a winding back road. The BMW R 1250 RS top speed brushes up against 200 km/h, which remains more than enough to eat up miles without feeling outclassed by a Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX or the late Honda VFR 800, its historic rival now absent from the lineup.

BMW R 1250 RS

The move from 1200 to 1250 is not simply a displacement bump. ShiftCam transforms the character of the flat-twin. At low and mid-range revs, the intake camshaft operates on a partial-load profile, favoring efficiency and flexibility. Past a certain threshold, an electromechanical mechanism switches to more aggressive cam lobes to unleash the full cavalry. This dual mechanical nature makes the engine far more pleasant in daily use than the old unit. You gain smoothness without sacrificing character. All of it Euro5 compliant, with fuel consumption held to 4.7 liters per 100 km. With an 18-liter tank, count on a comfortable range of roughly 380 kilometers between fill-ups. Touring riders will appreciate that.

On the chassis side, the RS ditched the Telelever dear to BMW since 2015 in favor of a 45 mm inverted fork—more conventional but also more communicative. The Paralever remains on duty at the rear, coupled to the shaft drive, that BMW hallmark that spares you chain maintenance. The two-piece tubular steel frame uses the engine as a stressed member, an architecture that keeps weight down to 243 kg wet. That's no featherweight, but it's one of the lightest in the R range. Braking relies on 320 mm floating discs clamped by four-piston radial calipers, backed by an ABS that has been non-deactivatable since the 2020 model year. The 1530 mm wheelbase—15 mm longer than the R 1250 R roadster from which it derives—gives it reassuring stability at high speed.

The onboard electronics are no slouch either. Road and Rain modes come standard along with ASC traction control and hill start assist. For demanding riders, the Riding Mode Pro package adds Dynamic and configurable Dynamic Pro modes, DTC traction control, cornering-sensitive ABS Pro, and engine brake control. The BMW R 1250 RS accessories catalog is a financial black hole in its own right: quickshifter, heated grips, cruise control, keyless ignition, and latest-generation Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension capable of automatically adapting to load. The 6.5-inch TFT display, connected to a smartphone via the BMW Motorrad app, handily replaces the old digital instrument cluster. Navigation, music, calls—everything runs through the dashboard.

At a list price of 15,850 euros, the 2021 BMW R 1250 RS sits in the upper-middle range of the segment. Those eyeing a used BMW R 1250 RS will find 2019 or 2020 model years at softer prices on the second-hand market, as the model changed little between the 2022, 2023, and 2024 versions. Three trims are offered: Basic in understated dark tones, Exclusive with a gray frame and gold calipers, and Sport that stands out with black lacquered wheels and a stainless steel belly pan. This sport-tourer is aimed at the experienced rider, a lover of long trips taken at a brisk pace, who refuses to choose between riding pleasure and long-distance comfort. It lacks the off-road versatility of a GS and the bite of an S 1000 RR, but it fills a niche that no one else at BMW truly serves. A test ride on the BMW R 1250 RS is usually all it takes to understand why its owners remain loyal, sometimes across multiple generations. In a world of adventure bikes and roadsters, it carves its own path with a mechanical elegance that has become rare.
