Overview
One thing is certain and absolute: the 1250 Pan America is a major event in Harley-Davidson history. It's the brand's first trail bike, the first model to deliver as much power as a large roadster or a good sportbike, and whether it achieves success or not, whether it pleases or not, whether it tackles rough terrain or not, its mark is indelibly etched.
Indeed, the MoCo doesn’t hesitate to showcase it over several days. Here is the Limited version, justifiably. A new episode that feels even more touring-oriented. It descends in a straight line from the CVO model, borrowing many elements but subtracting the luxurious sweeteners. No striking paint, more discretion, and above all, eyes fixed on adventure.
The Pan America Limited is derived from the Special version, enhanced with a trio of aluminum luggage (designed with SW-Motech). Certainly, this visually weighs down the rear. Unless, with its original, stamped-metal profile, the addition of cabinets would almost be appropriate. We finally have the captain Karcass’s motorcycle. No need for a backpack. You will have 120 liters of capacity available in total: 38 in the top case, 37 in the right saddlebag, and 45 on the left.
What else has it taken from the CVO? Well, its large aluminum skid plate, its Up&Down shifter, a radiator protector, its spoked wheels, its auxiliary headlights, and its adjustable foot controls. As for the crashbars, handguards, center stand, and a host of comfort items, they come from the Special.
The Pan’s fiery twin doesn’t really change. An engine with a philosophy very different from American Big Blocks, with more revs, a much sportier temperament, and a surge of power that flies instead of “pushing” the machine. Its 150 horsepower is surprising, and fits well with the trend of maxi-trails. A small particularity: it delivers 129 Nm of torque here, while the Special is at 128 Nm and the ST is at 127. A specific calibration for each or a purely marketing difference to establish a “hierarchy”? These few Nm will change absolutely nothing. On the other hand, the weight will have more influence. With all its gear, the Pan America Limited reaches 299 kg. That’s 53 kg more than the ST. Enough to calm down the launches a bit and encourage a slightly less daring riding style.
The radial piston Brembos will have a bit more work to do. As for the movements themselves, they will be at the mercy of everything Harley has been able to fit into this trail bike. What a cauldron! There are 9 Riding Modes, cornering ABS, semi-active suspension with automatic lowering, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, electronic linked braking, hill hold control, wheelie control, motor torque mitigation, an adjustable windscreen and seat, heated grips, adaptive cornering lighting, smartphone pairing, a 6.8-inch color TFT screen, cruise control, a USB-C port...... a true GS full-option technical sheet.
The price also approaches it. This Harley-Davidson 1250 Pan America Limited costs barely less than the CVO; and almost 7,000 more than the two siblings. This does not take into account an important factor: the divergence. With the Pan America, you ride a trail different from the others; you ride a Harley different from the others.
