Overview

It’s a shock, it’s a wave, it’s a pulse through souls, roads, and stones. One more trail bike... but one that surprises with just the mention of its manufacturer. Because yes, the surprise came from where it wasn't expected. Harley has joined the maxi-trail club, with its 1250 Pan America. It teases with higher-level pretensions; then it suggests a better-equipped Special version.

In this configuration, the Pan America asserts itself much more. It won’t be chosen for its cosmetic flirtations but for its improvements. There are a few everywhere, from detail to high-tech.

There are things that seem obvious to us; so much so that we don't understand why they aren't standard on the base model. We’re talking about handguards, a center stand, or heated grips. When traversing all kinds of roads and weather conditions, these comforts are quite practical. Harley then installs a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), an aluminum engine guard, radiator crash bars, an adjustable two-position rear brake pedal, a steering damper, and a Daymaker adaptive cornering headlight. Thanks to the IMU, the Pan America gradually illuminates each of the 3 LED elements located on either side of the headlight. Lighting phases are activated at an 8-degree angle, then 15°, and finally 23° for the most complete illumination in the turn.

To those who still see Harley-Davidson as a brand producing only antiquated machines with 1940s technology, the company can respond with a serious dose of modernism. The 1250 Pan America is equipped with a beautiful, large-size (17.3 cm) TFT color screen, control systems for traction, cornering slip, hill hold, wheelies, rear wheel lifts, engine braking, and linked braking, a cornering ABS, riding Modes, a USB-C port and another 12V, a cruise control, a Smartphone-coupled GPS navigator… and electronic suspensions.

Harley turned to Showa to supply all the equipment but developed its own control software. Thanks to the sensors, the fork and shock adapt in real time to the road profile and the rider's driving style. With its load adjustment system, the bike automatically detects the weight that is loaded onto it and adjusts the preload at the rear. As often, this damping is linked to the riding Modes and reacts according to the desired theme. Five profiles are in memory: - Comfort: everything is set for maximum comfort - Balanced: the compromise between comfort and efficiency of versatile driving - Sport: a more rigid damping to allow sporty driving - Off-Road version soft: more suppleness and reduced rebound for all-terrain rides or difficult terrain - Off-Road version extreme: a damping calibrated for muscular driving, with enough to get out of heavy or sandy terrain.

The Milwaukee house keeps a treat in the options range, the adaptive ride height. Everything is done automatically for the bike to be higher or lower depending on the conditions. For example, when stopped, the Pan is lowered to allow the feet to touch the ground - once on the road, it rises to regain ground clearance and its dynamic capabilities. One can choose sub-modes for the management of this process: - Automatic: the suspension lowers as quickly as necessary during braking, to finish at the lowest level once the Pan is stopped. - Locked: the height is maintained at its normal level and does not budge. - Short delay: the lowering is delayed until the bike stops. - Long delay: same but a little longer.

Oh, by the way, for the riding Modes. There are four more on the Special; bringing the total to nine. In addition to "Sport", "Road", "Rain", "Off-Road" (and "Off-Road +")" and "custom", more confirmed Modes install onboard; allowing more combinations.

The Harley 1250 Pan-America is also the most powerful model from the manufacturer with a twin of 150 horsepower and almost 13 mkg of torque. Whether it’s the engine, the chassis relying on the engine for its rigidity, the silhouette, the riding position, the wheels, the tires, the adjustable windscreen, or the aluminum swingarm, everything is new on this beast.

Most of the ‘Special’ models from the MoCo are style touches to make the bikes more aggressive. For the Pan, it’s something else entirely. A serious array of equipment to make it a premium trail bike loaded with technology. A machine that one could have believed was created by Northrop Grumman. Harley has traded in cowboy boots for ranger boots - more than ready to crawl through a dense and merciless sector.
