Overview
A Harley maxi-trail, seriously? The Milwaukee firm, which built its legend on roaring V-Twins on asphalt, which would risk scratching the earth with a large adventurer? The shock is very real, and it bears a name: the Pan America 1250. We are facing a major strategic shift, perhaps the most daring since the introduction of the Evolution engine. This machine is not a simple statement of intent, it is a forceful move that directly targets the heart of the adventure trail market, dominated by Europeans.

Visually, the Pan America embraces a radical approach. Forget the sensual curves of a Multistrada or the restrained functionalism of a GS. Here, we have an imposing build, an angular silhouette and a nose that divides. It is raw, massive, with a charm that is more bulldozer than gazelle. The codes of the segment are nevertheless all present: large suspensions, spoked wheels, a high riding position, crash bars and a tank that promises range. But the school is clearly American, with an aesthetic as personal as it is assumed.
Where the bet becomes serious is under the hood. Harley unveils a brand new 60° liquid-cooled V-twin engine, developing 145 horsepower and a torque of 122 Nm. These figures immediately place it in the league of the greats, between the BMW R 1250 GS and the Ducati 1260 Multistrada. It is an internal revolution, this engine offering nearly 50% more torque than the mythical M8 114. The brand proves that it can do more than low-revving brutes.
The technical specifications show that Harley did not come to play a cameo role. We find an inverted fork, Brembo radial brakes with monoblock calipers, chain transmission and a plethora of electronic equipment expected in this segment. TFT dashboard, semi-active suspensions, traction control, Cornering ABS, adjustable screen: the Pan America had to be up to par to claim to compete. At the announced price of around €17,000, it will not be allowed to make mistakes against ultra-proven competitors.
So, for whom does this Harley of a new kind run? Clearly for the adventurous globetrotter who refuses the too-beaten paths, both literally and figuratively. It is the motorcycle of the explorer who wants to travel the Pan American route, from northern Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, without sacrificing the presence and character of an American machine. It is a bold, but necessary, bet. Remains to be seen whether this first foray into the world of maxi-trails will seduce the purists of the brand while convincing the followers of the segment. The battle of the continents is declared.
