Overview

With the BMW R 1200 S, Munich decided to take the boxer out of storage. Not for the museum, but for the track. Because in 2006, and again in 2008, the message is clear: this flat-twin must prove that it can compete in the sport category, without denying its fundamentals. We are talking about a machine that is looking for an audience, between the seasoned tourer accustomed to GS models and the purist track rider. A bold bet.

BMW R 1200 S

The heart of the matter is this 1170 cm3 boxer engine, already known on the R 1200 GS. But here, it is reworked for performance. Redesigned cylinder heads, reinforced connecting rods, more aggressive camshafts, and modified timing allow the usable rev range to be extended to 8250 rpm, a record for a production BMW boxer. Compression reaches 12.5:1. The result is a power output of 122 horsepower and a torque of 112 Nm. These figures, combined with a shaft drive, create an atypical sportbike. It does not rival the 180 horsepower of the Japanese models, but offers propulsion rich in sensations, very linear, where torque is available from mid-range. It's a different philosophy.

The chassis is just as specific. The three-section frame uses the engine as a stressed member. The front end is equipped with BMW’s Telelever, a solution that eliminates dive under braking and offers remarkable stability. At the rear, the Paralever and the aluminum single-sided swingarm control the reactions of the shaft drive. With a dry weight of 190 kg and 213 kg fully fueled, the R 1200 S is not a lightweight. It is positioned more as a sport-GT, halfway between a Honda VFR and a Triumph Sprint ST of the time. The 830 mm seat height is accessible, and the riding position remains relatively relaxed for a machine announced as sporty.

The equipment is complete, with a dashboard inspired by the GS, including a digital display for the gear engaged, range, or temperature. The brakes are effective, and the 120/70 and 180/55 sized tires ensure good contact. But the real luxury, for enthusiasts, lies in the Öhlins option. A complete suspension kit, adjustable for compression and rebound, allows the motorcycle to be adapted for track use. This version, often associated with the Boxer Cup, is highly sought after today on forums dedicated to the BMW R 1200 S. It transforms the machine.

In conclusion, the BMW R 1200 S is a motorcycle with character. It is not suitable for those seeking brute force or featherweight agility. It will rather appeal to the experienced rider, an admirer of German engineering, who wants a sportbike capable of long journeys without sacrificing dynamic pleasure. Its unique boxer engine, practical shaft drive, and technical solutions like Telelever, make it a singular alternative in the world of sportbikes. For around 13,500 euros at the time, it offered a distinct experience. Today, a used BMW R 1200 S represents an interesting choice for a collector or a rider seeking a sportbike with a strong personality, far from the beaten path.
