Overview
The motorcycle is synonymous with freedom...The trail implies escape, versatility, simplicity...With the M 1000 XR, all of this becomes very relative. It represents the ultimate mutation of the crossover category, the extrapolation of a hybrid concept toward the apotheosis of human madness. This time, they’ve done it: the fusion of a Superbike and a trail bike. Improbable a short while ago, unreasonable yesterday, on sale today.
The M 1000 XR prototype, revealed before summer 2023, opened the door to all speculation. The motorcycle was there, ready, only releasing this precursor on the roads of the TT to build anticipation. All that was needed was to give it its definitive colors and unleash its terror on the roads. Here it is, make way, widen the road, put on your anti-G suit, forget all notions of relativity, and twist the throttle. Sportbikes around this XR won’t understand what’s happening when the 201 horsepower kicks in!
That’s right: 201 horsepower. Or 148 kW if you prefer. That’s the power of an R1 or a ZX-10R. Nothing surprising when you know the engine is closely derived from the S 1000 RR. Unlike the S 1000 XR, BMW has given it Shiftcam technology. This variable valve timing system adds madness to this 4-cylinder engine. The M 1000 R knows something about it. At low and mid-range speeds, the camshafts optimized for torque are in place, allowing for an engine as full as that of the S 1000 XR. Then, at 9,000 rpm, the fuses blow in the engine. The camshafts move, the “power” profile is engaged in 1 tenth of a second, and from there, it pedals hard up to 11,000 rpm. At this point, the variable intake trumpets also change profile to boost airflow. Nothing stops the cylinders in their frantic race to 14,600 rpm.
The rider will certainly have shifted up a gear earlier, around 12,750 rpm where the peak power is located. A tap on the quickshifter (standard) and it’s off for a crazy push. As if the double-century of horsepower wasn’t enough, the M 1000 XR installs a larger sprocket on the rear wheel (47 teeth, against 45 on the S) while shortening the three shortest gears in the box. It’s no longer a cannonball but a disguised catapult. It takes only 7.4 seconds to go from 0 to 200 km/h, 2 tenths less than a Ferrari 488 Pista. As for the S 1000 XR, it will take 1.3 seconds longer to reach the same milestone. Explosive this M trail, and fortunately under electronic perfusion to avoid being satellized.
BMW has put in just about everything it had. Both systems from competition and comfort aids for road use. This ranges from the Hill Start Control Pro slope start assistant (it detects the slope and activates itself if the motorcycle’s platform angles by + or - 5°) to the pit lane speed limiter, through the Launch Control for sprinter starts; without forgetting the cruise control, the Up&Down Pro quickshifter, the traction and wheelie controls, the engine braking adjustment, and the Brake Slide assist. This function brakes the rear wheel drift by maintaining controlled slip, by playing on the braking pressure and by controlling the rear wheel slip.
As the M 100 XR claims a certain versatility, its riding Modes are grouped according to two themes. For a use it deems standard, which means nervous for most of its counterparts, 4 Modes are available: Rain, Road, Dynamic, and Race. Then when the time comes to get excited on the track, the rider can engage the 3 additional Race Pro Modes. Depending on one of these 7 Modes, you can adjust the traction control on 4 levels, refine the wheelies to limit or remove them, choose one of the 4 throttle management options, from soft to extremely direct, and adjust the engine braking on 3 levels.
As the frame of the S 1000 XRest is particularly robust, even more so when using the engine as a structural element, BMW has retained it as is for the chassis of the M. However, the suspensions benefit from standard Dynamic DDC damping. The 45 mm inverted fork and its rear damper counterpart are coached according to the riding Mode chosen. From the most comfortable to the firmest, with real-time adaptation to the road profile. Of course, it is possible to fine-tune the damping in each Mode and according to the load, solo or with a passenger. On this M 1000 XR, the fork spring is adjustable in conjunction with the piloted damping, and the front end receives a new steering damper.
In addition to all the aids, attempts to take off will also be juggled by winglets. Each member of the M family is equipped with one. On the most powerful XR, they begin to generate downforce from 100 km/h. Further on, faster, the load reaches 11.4 kilos on the front end at 220 km/h. Enough to prevent a little wheelie before the electronics take care of it. So, a few horsepower and more traction go to the ground. But to fully feel the benefits of these wings and gain the milliseconds that go with it, you already need a fair bit of technical know-how. And before checking if they are the same as on the M 1000 R roadster (they are not), prepare the braking with the big blue M calipers. They are identical. 4 pistons enclosed in a Nissin monoblock caliper, radially fixed. When triggering the action of the radial pump, each bites a 320 mm disc with an efficiency designed in the forge of the Superbike. From the experience gained by the official race motorcycle, BMW has developed the braking that will calm its big neutron trail down. Let's just say it will relax it.
The deceleration, every technician can see it on the dashboard. The beautiful 6.5-inch screen displays this kind of data, as well as the angles taken during qualifying... rides, DTC action, trips, full of data, and obviously the tachometer. The latter has a dotted zone where not to go until the engine is warm. The display possibilities are more complete than on other models. Already, a big M greets you at power-up. Then 4 types of screens invite you with your eyes.
Do not forget an essential element: being at the level of a hypersport does not prevent riding every day. It is in everyday life that everyone appreciates these little things that are heated grips, a USB socket (at the rear), a brodaded M saddle that the factory will offer in three different heights, Keyless Ride keyless entry. Not to mention the premium parts, those that flatter the machine, such as the Endurance M chain, the lightweight lithium battery, the Akrapovic silencer, the milled handlebar support, this same handlebar where the M XR lettering is laser engraved, and the adaptive turn signals.
The M 1000 XR is offered in two finishes. Here, we cannot simply talk about colors. All the standard equipment is found on the white Motorsport. However, the black version, 5,150 euros more expensive, is enhanced with the Competition pack. The forged aluminum wheels are replaced by carbon models. The weight saving is noticeable: 1.5 kg. Added to this are adjustable footrests, a GPS-Laptrigger data analyzer, aluminum milled levers and some carbon parts (mudguard, fairing flanks, cockpit inner trim and contact button trim).
BMW would be wrong to deprive itself of a very high-performance trail. All the ingredients are available in its range, the concept perfectly corresponds to its definition of sport, whether in motorcycles or cars, and in terms of image, it is a knockout uppercut. It is not so much the sales figures that are important but the demonstration imprinted by this M 1000 XR. Scraping a Porsche while sitting as on a GS, you don’t see that every day.
