Overview
When Munich decides to cross the DNA of a championship Superbike with the posture of a road crossover, the result resembles nothing known. The BMW M 1000 XR 2024 is exactly this hybrid creature that no one would have dared to order from the engineering department five years ago. A trail that flirts with 278 km/h. A sporty touring bike that beats a Ferrari 488 Pista in the 0 to 200 km/h sprint, in 7.4 seconds. Welcome to the category that didn't exist.

The engine is the heart of the matter, and it deserves attention. Four-cylinder in-line, 999 cc, architecture directly inherited from the competition S 1000 RR, with the added benefit of Shiftcam technology that the standard S 1000 XR has never been allowed to have. This variable valve timing system operates on two cam profiles depending on engine speed. Below 9,000 rpm, the engine behaves like a muscular and full-bodied trail bike, with 112.8 Nm of torque available from low rpm. Past this threshold, the profile switches in one-tenth of a second to the power mapping, the intake trumpets also change geometry, and the 201 horsepower are unleashed until the peak at 12,750 rpm. The displacement theoretically climbs to 14,600 rpm. Let's just say that the BMW M 1000 XR specifications are unlike any trail bike on the market, not even the Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, which is the only one capable of holding a serious conversation in this segment.
To transform this power into usable acceleration, BMW has modified the transmission compared to the S 1000 XR. Larger rear sprocket, three shorter gears, Pro Up&Down shifter standard. The result on the road resembles a catapult more than a classic propulsor. Electronics monitor the situation with seven riding modes, including three Race Pro modes for track use. Traction control is refined on four levels, wheelies are dosed or suppressed, engine braking is adjustable in three positions, and Brake Slide Assist maintains controlled rear slip when the rider plays with the brakes into corners. This level of personalization far exceeds what a Africa Twin Adventure Sports or a KTM 1290 Super Adventure R offers.
The DDC suspension with electronically piloted dynamic damping adapts in real time to the road profile according to the engaged mode. The 45 mm inverted fork with 138 mm of travel and the single rear shock of the same stroke are not there to play at being a trail bike: their calibration varies from comfortable to firm depending on the rider's mood and the load carried. The aerodynamic winglets come into play from 100 km/h and generate 11.4 kg of downforce on the front end at 220 km/h. On the track, this detail changes the lean angle. On the road, it reassures. Four-piston radial mount Nissin calipers bite down on 320 mm discs with ferocity directly imported from the Superbike paddock. At 223 kg fully fueled, the machine is not light, but every kilo is justified by equipment that leaves nothing to chance.

What makes the 2024 BMW M 1000 XR coherent in everyday use is precisely the attention paid to comfort details. Heated grips, cruise control, 6.5-inch screen, seat available in three heights including 850 mm as standard, Keyless Ride, Akrapovic muffler standard, lightweight lithium battery. The Competition pack, available as an option at an additional cost of 5,150 euros, adds carbon wheels for a weight saving of 1.5 kg, adjustable footrests and a GPS data analyzer. Two universes coexist in the same machine, without apparent compromise between one and the other.

At 26,990 euros for the base version, the BMW M 1000 XR price sits in a category of its own. This is not a motorcycle for beginners, nor even for touring riders simply looking to devour distance. This is a tool for experienced riders who want a machine capable of doing everything without ever apologizing for its brutality. The question of the BMW M 1000 XR used will quickly arise for those who want to access this category without paying the new price. Munich simply decided that a trail bike could be a hypersport in disguise. And it's hard to argue with them.
