Overview
Four. That's the number of production roadsters exceeding 200 horsepower, a club so exclusive it resembles a sect more than a commercial segment. The Ducati Streetfighter V4, the Kawasaki Z H2, the MV-Agusta Brutale 1000 and the BMW M 1000 R. Within this league of greats, Munich plays a different score: less Latin than Ducati, less raw than Kawasaki, but perhaps more complete than the two combined. The 2025 version of the BMW M 1000 R further refines this positioning, with a redesigned face shared with the S 1000 R, more aggressive, in the tone of a machine claiming a Superbike pedigree. The small M logo slipped between the two headlights is not there by chance: it certifies direct lineage with the competition M 1000 RR.

This lineage is mainly read under the valve cover. The 999 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine, with a tight bore of 80 mm for a stroke of 49.7 mm, is directly derived from the in-house Superbike. Result: 210 horsepower at 13,750 rpm and 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm, 40 horsepower more than the S 1000 R, despite sharing its architecture. ShiftCam technology, which varies the timing of the titanium valves according to engine speed, largely explains this energy density. The six-speed gearbox has been shortened to match the engine's character, and an M Endurance chain transmits all of this to a 200/55-ZR17 rear tire. The 0 to 200 km/h sprint takes 7.5 seconds, a performance that would challenge more than one supercar. Top speed is announced at 280 km/h. For a motorcycle weighing 199 kg fully fueled, the power-to-weight ratio is strikingly vertiginous.
What distinguishes the 2025 BMW M 1000 R from the competition is the sophistication with which it attempts to make this potential usable. Four standard riding modes, Rain, Road, Dynamic and Race, plus three Race Pro in option for riders who want to delve into the electronic settings. Each mode pilots the throttle response, traction control, anti-lock braking system, anti-wheeling and engine braking. Launch Control, the bidirectional Shifter Pro, Brake Slide Assist to manage drift on corner entry, it’s all there. The 165 mm TFT screen is full of information: lean angle, deceleration, lap time, throttle position relative to gear changes. We are clearly in a track tool dressed as a roadster. The aerodynamic side fins, now present like on the Streetfighter V4 or the Brutale, generate 11 kg of downforce on the front wheel at 220 km/h, directly relieving traction control and allowing for more effective power on corner exit.

The frame inherits the aluminum perimeter frame from the S 1000 RR, with a 45 mm inverted fork and a mono-shock absorber, both piloted by DDC Dynamic Damping Control. Forged aluminum rims lighten the unsprung masses, and carbon wheels remain available in the optional M package to shave off a few more grams. Braking utilizes radial four-piston Nissin calipers derived from the Superbike, clamping floating 320 mm discs at the front, with two types of pads depending on usage, road or track endurance. Cornering ABS supervises the whole system. Seat height at 828 mm and wheelbase at 1,455 mm define a tall and committed rider, not a rushed tourist.

At €22,940 for the 2025 BMW M 1000 R, the price is high but consistent with the level of standard equipment. It's less than what the competition charged for equivalent versions, and the onboard electronics justify the bill in large part. Opinions on the BMW M 1000 R converge on the same observation: this machine is not for beginners or Sunday riders. It targets the advanced practitioner, capable of exploiting a Superbike chassis, and who seeks route-track versatility without major compromise. Without the electronic arsenal, the 210 horsepower would simply be uncontrollable in most situations. With it, they become a resource. Perhaps that's Munich's true strength: having built an unreasonable motorcycle, and then having done everything to keep it reasonably tame.
