Overview
Motorcycle: BMW K 1600 GTL (2023)

Long-distance motorcycle travel is a philosophy. And the BMW K 1600 GTL embodies this philosophy with a consistency that few manufacturers achieve. When Munich decides to place its 1649 cc inline six-cylinder engine under a grand touring fairing, the result leaves little room for debate: 160 horsepower at 7750 rpm, 175 Nm of torque available from 5250 rpm, a six-speed shaft drive transmission. On paper, it’s a locomotive. On the road, it’s a first-class armchair that reaches 201 km/h.
This engine is the heart of the matter, and it would be dishonest not to start with it. An inline six-cylinder in a motorcycle is a configuration that Honda explored in the 1970s, but BMW has rationalized, compressed, and homologated it to Euro 4 standards without sacrificing a single horsepower or a single Newton-meter. The sound texture is velvety, almost automotive, very different from the rumble of the American competition. A Honda Gold Wing will respond with its flat-twin smoothness; a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic will tap on its two V-cylinders with the emphasis it is known for. The GTL plays a different score, more refined, more mechanical in the right sense of the term.

The low seat at 750 mm, the forward-mounted footpegs, the handlebars angled towards the rider: everything is designed to absorb kilometers without hostility. The top case with backrest transforms the rear seat into a truly habitable position, and the electrically adjustable windscreen does the job that is expected of it. The semi-active ESA Dynamic suspension adjusts damping in real time in two modes, ROAD or DYNAMIC, and the transition from one to the other is made while riding. On a 350 kg machine fully fueled, it’s a luxury that becomes a necessity. The electric reverse gear, now standard since the 2020 model year, responds to the same logic: 350 kg to push backwards in a narrow driveway is a test of strength; a button on the left handlebar switchgear is self-evident. Adaptive cornering headlights and daytime running lights that arrived on the BMW K 1600 GTL 2021 complete a package that covers most situations.

The standard equipment is generous: ABS Pro, traction control DTC, TFT screen, tire pressure sensor, heated grips and seat for the rider and passenger, cruise control, Bluetooth audio system. The Pro shifter, borrowed from the S 1000 RR, is among the appreciated options to relieve the left hand on long distances. BMW also offers a "Spezial" customization department for those who want to push the level of finish even further, with specific paints and factory-mounted accessories under manufacturer's warranty. The BMW K 1600 GTL top case backrest, passenger armrests, the BMW K 1600 GTL accessories in the broad sense constitute a comprehensive catalog for those who want to configure their machine according to their travel habits.
The downside of this richness is the price. At 29,000 euros for the new BMW K 1600 GTL in its base version, one enters a segment where each piece of missing standard equipment becomes a legitimate frustration. No integrated GPS or keyless start in the standard equipment: on a motorcycle positioned at the top of the range, it’s an oversight that irritates. The Gold Wing integrates navigation as standard at a comparable price. That said, the target audience knows exactly what they are buying: a German grand tourer built for demanding long-distance riders, capable of swallowing 600 kilometers in a day without arriving exhausted. Those who are looking for a used BMW K 1600 GTL or consult BMW K 1600 GTL used ads on the classifieds to access this segment at a lower cost will find recent model years in good condition, proof that this motorcycle lasts over time. It is perhaps the best indicator of its real value.
