Overview
Imagine 350 kilograms of steel, aluminum, and leather traversing Germany at 130 km/h, a six-cylinder inline engine singing its deep, velvety score, the rider settled into a chair 750 mm from the ground, the passenger leaning against the top case backrest as in a first-class lounge. That’s exactly what the 2020 BMW K 1600 GTL offers, and if you find that excessive, this machine isn't for you.

The inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,649 cm³ remains the core of the commercial argument. With 160 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 175 Nm of torque available from 5,520 rpm, it technically outperforms the Honda Gold Wing and its flat-four engine, while delivering a smoothness that American V-twin engines from Harley-Davidson simply cannot match on the road. BMW managed to meet Euro 4 emissions standards without sacrificing a single horsepower or Newton-meter, which was a feat for an already well-optimized engine. The announced fuel consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers, coupled with the 26.5-liter tank, guarantees a theoretical range exceeding 450 kilometers. For a long-distance tourer, that’s the kind of calculation that reassures you before hitting the highway.
The 2020 BMW K 1600 GTL brings reverse gear as standard equipment, an evolution that may elicit a smile until you try to push 350 kilograms uphill by hand. The system uses the starter motor via a flexible shaft and is controlled from the left handlebar control module. Practical, functional, and frankly welcome on a machine of this size. Semi-active ESA Dynamic suspension, which became standard during the previous overhaul, continues to do its job with two distinct modes depending on whether you prefer absolute comfort or a slightly firmer behavior in sporty riding. The engine-bearing aluminum frame, combined with the Duolever at the front and the Paralever swingarm with cardan drive at the rear, forms a chassis of remarkable coherence. This weight, once underway, is effectively forgotten.

The standard equipment largely justifies the BMW K 1600 GTL price tag of 29,000 euros. ABS Pro corrected according to the lean angle, traction control DTC, electrically adjustable windscreen with position memory, TFT screen, tire pressure sensors, heated grips and seat for the rider and passenger, cruise control, integrated Bluetooth audio system, Hill Start Control Pro since 2019. The BMW K 1600 GTL top case is delivered as standard, with its BMW K 1600 GTL top case backrest that transforms the rear seat into a true cruising station. The machine can be enriched with various BMW K 1600 GTL accessories from the in-house customization program, including a BMW K 1600 GTL armrest that completes the transformation of the passenger seat into a business-class seat.

The weak point remains the price. At 29,000 euros for the 2020 model year, the GTL sits above the base Gold Wing and trails the best-equipped versions of the American competition. The absence of a standard GPS and keyless start at this level of range will be regretted. Those looking for a used BMW K 1600 GTL will find recent model years at more reasonable prices; a 2019 or 2021 model offers the same fundamentals for significantly less. The GTL is aimed at a specific audience: the grand traveler who makes no compromises on passenger comfort, who considers long weekends in Europe as a sport in their own right, and for whom luxurious finishes are not an option but a requirement. For this profile, no other motorcycle on the market does it better.
