Overview

When BMW decided to build an inline six for a touring motorcycle, many scoffed. A powerplant of this format in a two-wheeled vehicle was either genius or Munich madness. Several years later, the 2019 BMW K 1600 GTL silences all skeptics, and its 1,649 cc six-cylinder remains an architecture without equal in the category.

BMW K 1600 GTL

What distinguishes the GTL from its GT cousin is a philosophy of travel taken to the ultimate degree. The lowered seat at 750 mm, the handlebar brought closer to the rider, the footrests advanced: everything has been designed to absorb kilometers without stiffness in the back. The integrated top case with its passenger backrest is not added to the motorcycle; it is part of it. This is far removed from aftermarket additions bolted onto machines not originally designed for them. For those seeking a BMW K 1600 GTL armrest or a perfectly integrated BMW K 1600 GTL top case, BMW designed the whole thing from the start. This is a significant difference compared to a Kawasaki GTR 1400 or a Honda Gold Wing, which adopt different approaches but never with such consistent overall coherence.

The six-cylinder delivers 160 hp at 7,750 rpm and a torque of 175 Nm at 5,250 rpm, transmitted unfiltered by the Paralever driveshaft. What strikes you is not the raw figure, but the texture. Power arrives with a roundness that neither a V-twin nor a four-cylinder can imitate. Euro 4 homologation, achieved without compromising performance, confirms that Bavarian engineers master their subject. The six-speed gearbox and shaft drive ensure mechanical silence and progressivity that make the 350 kg fully laden weight forgettable. The deeply worked center of gravity allows this mass to be honestly manageable, even if low-speed maneuvers remain the affair of a rider not discovering motorcycles.

The chassis, composed of the Duolever at the front and the Paralever at the rear, receives the ESA Dynamic semi-active suspension as standard since 2017. Two modes are available, Road and Dynamic, selectable while riding. Damping adapts in real time according to variations in ride height, and the effect is noticeable from the first few kilometers on degraded surfaces. This is where the GTL widens the gap with less sophisticated machines. Braking combines four pistons at the front on a double disc and two pistons at the rear, with a Pro ABS that takes into account the lean angle, inherited since 2016.

BMW K 1600 GTL

The standard equipment largely justifies the BMW K 1600 GTL price displayed at €26,300. TFT screen, electric adjustable windscreen with memory, heated grips and seat, cruise control, tire pressure sensors, Bluetooth audio, Hill Start Control Pro in 2019: the list is long. Too long to be honest without mentioning what is missing. Reverse gear, essential on 350 kg, remains optional. Adaptive cornering light, presented as a technology of the future for years, is still not in the catalog. On a motorcycle at this price level, leaving paying options on such justified equipment is a commercial calculation difficult to defend. Moreover, BMW has opened its customization department "Spezial" for Touring models, with factory-mountable parts covered by the warranty, which offers a real alternative to independent BMW K 1600 GTL accessories.

BMW K 1600 GTL

The BMW K 1600 GTL is aimed at a very specific profile: the grand traveler who refuses compromises on comfort, accepts to invest in a premium motorcycle, and does not need a GT to push hard in curves. Those seeking a used BMW K 1600 GTL on the used market will find recent models still very complete, as the machine evolves through successive refinements rather than ruptures. Direct competition, Gold Wing in the lead, offers a different response with its flat-six and more American character. The GTL, for its part, remains Germanic in spirit: rigorous, precise, and convinced that technical detail makes all the difference.
