Overview
Imagine an Austrian engineer who spends his vacation in Sturgis. He returns home with ideas, sketches in his pockets, and the obsession of building a bagger that betrays neither its roots nor its ambitions. This is roughly the genesis of the BMW K 1600 B, this Germanic six-cylinder touring machine that plays in the American custom arena without ever losing its accent.

The 2022 version of the BMW K 1600 B has not undergone a stylistic revolution, and that’s intentional. Those familiar with the model, from the 2018 BMW K 1600 B to the subsequent editions, will find a familiar silhouette. The novelty is concentrated at the front, with a full LED lighting unit common to the entire K 1600 range. This headlight doesn’t just shine, it thinks. The low beams pivot up to two degrees depending on the motorcycle’s lean angle, illuminating curves before you even reach them. The "Welcome Light" function illuminates the machine as you approach, a small luxury that flatters the ego as much as it reassures in a dark parking lot. Behind the short bubble, a stylistic signature of the model, a 10.25-inch TFT screen centralizes navigation, connectivity, and driving mode management. It’s large, legible, and worthy of the €27,490 asking price. Almost, because the audio system remains an option on this BMW Motorrad touring machine. On a machine of this size and price, this commercial choice leaves a bitter taste.
Under the fairing, the inline six-cylinder engine of 1,649 cc has digested the Euro 5 standard without losing its character. Moreover, the BMS-O engine management update, with its two knock sensors and additional lambda probes, has released torque where it counts. The 179.9 Nm now arrives at 5,250 rpm and the 160.5 horsepower peak at 6,750 rpm, a thousand revolutions earlier than on previous versions. On a 343.8 kg machine, this additional availability is not a detail. The engine responds more crisply, earlier, and the MSR dynamic engine braking control prevents the rear wheel from locking up during hard downshifts. The mechanics are mastered, the electronics are watching, and the shaft transmission transmits all of that smoothly.

The new generation Dynamic ESA pilot suspension automatically manages the ride height based on the load and driving conditions. No manual adjustment, no calculation to make before loading the saddlebags, the system adapts on its own. On a motorcycle designed to swallow kilometers without constraint, this is consistent. The 750 mm high seat remains accessible despite the size, and the 26.5-liter tank offers serious range, especially given the announced consumption of 5.7 liters per hundred kilometers, which is reasonable for such a displacement.

Facing it in this niche market, the competition is serious. The Honda Gold Wing Bagger positions itself a few hundred euros above, with its flat-six and its reputation for absolute comfort. The Harley-Davidson Street Glide and Road Glide, as well as the Indian Challenger, exceed the budget but target a clientele that buys culture before buying a motorcycle. The 2022 BMW K 1600 B plays a different game, offering German precision and technology in a bagger format, for a driver who wants style without sacrificing dynamics. It’s not the Sunday cowboy’s motorcycle nor the track rider’s. It’s the urban grand traveler’s machine who appreciates efficiency as much as posture. The new price of the BMW K 1600 B will deter the undecided, but on the used market, earlier versions, from the 2020 BMW K 1600 B to the recent, are negotiated with a reasonable depreciation for this segment. A bagger that thinks in kilometers, not in miles.
