Overview
Imagine a Bavarian manufacturer, king of grand touring and onboard technology, deciding to tackle the most American segment of all: the bagger. This is not a gratuitous provocation. Harley-Davidson sells its Street Glide by the tens of thousands each year, and BMW Motorrad has understood that ignoring this market would mean leaving a boulevard open to the competition. The BMW K 1600 B is therefore this European response to a motorcycle culture deeply rooted across the Atlantic, and it arrives with an argument that no one else can pull out of their pocket: a six-cylinder inline engine.

That's where it all begins. Where almost all baggers on the market make do with a V-twin, often naturally aspirated and limited in its ambitions, the BMW K 1600 B puts 160 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 5520 rpm on the table. The 1649 cm³ engine is a direct evolution of that which powers the K 1600 GT, this ultimate touring machine that grand touring enthusiasts know by heart. Only the Honda F6B, with its horizontal six-cylinder, can claim to compete with Munich for the title of mechanical nobility in this segment. Faced with Harley or Indian V-twin models, the difference in refinement is striking: the engine revs linearly, without jerks, with that characteristic sound of inline sixes that resembles a German sports sedan more than a Route 66 cruiser.
The style, for its part, clearly plays the card of American austerity. The silhouette stretches rearward, low and taut, with those fixed saddlebags whose flat lids integrate the rear lights in a resolutely Stars and Stripes spirit. The chrome mufflers run parallel to the ground, without compromise, as if the motorcycle had been designed to be photographed in profile on a deserted national road. The seat is 750 mm from the ground, which remains reasonable for a 336 kg machine in running order. This weight is real and felt in low-speed maneuvers, hence the welcome presence of a reverse assist function activatable from the left handlebar control. BMW Motorrad leaves nothing to chance on this point: we don't ask the rider of a BMW K 1600 B to flex their biceps in a parking lot.

Technically, the standard equipment is generous. The dynamic ESA suspension automatically manages damping in Road mode, while Cruise mode prioritizes comfort at a stabilized speed for long stages. Dual disc brakes with four-piston calipers at the front and ABS are part of the basic package, as is fitting for a motorcycle priced at €24,100. The Pro shifter, for shifting gears without a clutch in both directions, remains optional but is an obvious purchase for long journeys. The announced consumption of 5.7 liters per hundred, combined with the 26.5-liter tank, offers a theoretical range exceeding 460 kilometers. On the BMW K 1600 B 2018, this is a credible promise on the open road.

This Bavarian bagger is aimed at a specific profile: the grand tourer who refuses to choose between bagger style and the performance of a modern touring machine. It is not for beginners, nor for daily use in the city. Its 336 kilograms demand respect and experience. But for those who want to cross Europe in two days with luggage, in a relaxed feet-forward position, enjoying an engine that never tires, the BMW K 1600 B is a proposition difficult to ignore. The BMW Motorrad accessories catalog allows the machine to be personalized at will, which also fuels discussions on dedicated forums. At this price, the V-twin competition simply doesn't have the same mechanical arguments to put forward.
