Overview

Imagine an American bagger, but designed by Bavarian engineers who have never known how to do things by halves. That’s exactly what the BMW K 1600 B is: a European response, precise and powerful, to a segment long dominated by Harley-Davidson and its V-twins. The Street Glide reigns over sales across the Atlantic, and Munich understands that well. Whereas Milwaukee offers a V-twin engine, the K 1600 B boasts a 1649 cc inline-six, producing 160 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 5250 rpm. One doesn't respond to a provocation with half-measures.

BMW K 1600 B

The overall size commands respect even before turning the key. With a wet weight of 336 kg and a seat height of 750 mm, the BMW K 1600 B is clearly not intended for novices. This ground clearance was actually reduced in 2019, from 780 to 750 mm, which significantly changes handling at traffic lights. BMW also integrated Hill Start Control Pro as standard at that time, a hill-start assist that makes sense when juggling over 300 kg on a slope. For the 2021 version, the BMW K 1600 B 2021 further enriches its standard equipment with adaptive cornering headlights, tire pressure monitoring, and daytime running lights, all of which were previously charged as optional extras. The base price is set at 26,850 euros, clearly positioning this bagger in the premium category, well above a standard Harley Road Glide but in direct competition with the Honda Gold Wing in full configuration.

The lines alone tell the story of the project's ambition. The low, tapered rear section is not borrowed from the proportions of the K 1600 GT, even though the two machines share a common mechanical base. The rear frame has been completely redesigned to achieve this compact, downward-sloping silhouette, with integrated side cases that absorb the rear lights in a resolutely American style. The chrome silencers run parallel to the axis of the wheel, visually reinforcing this impression of a motorcycle that surges forward even when standing still. The fairing, with its short, electrically adjustable screen, provides effective protection without clashing with the bagger aesthetic, and the extended lateral deflectors towards the rear do a serious job against wind and rain, a quality that American purists can’t always claim.

BMW K 1600 B

The dynamic ESA electronic adjustable suspension, supplied as standard, offers two distinct modes. In Road mode, the damping automatically adapts to the road surface and load, allowing you to absorb rough roads effortlessly. In Cruise mode, the mapping is further softened to prioritize comfort at low speeds, where a BMW Motorrad touring BMW K 1600 B truly distinguishes itself from an old-fashioned bagger. The six-speed cardan transmission operates with total discretion, and the Shifter Pro option allows you to shift gears in both directions without touching the clutch. The motorized reverse gear, activated from the left handlebar switchgear, turns parking maneuvers into stress-free operations. For a motorcycle of this format, it’s not a gadget but a daily necessity.

BMW K 1600 B

Regarding BMW K 1600 B accessories, the customization range is vast, from forward-mounted footpegs to adopt a feet-forward position to eleven-spoke double forged wheels that further sharpen the visual presence. Range is reasonable with a 26.5-liter tank and a consumption figure of 5.7 liters per 100 km, giving a range of approximately 450 kilometers before stopping. Those looking for a BMW K 1600 B used will find examples from the 2018 or 2020 model years with slightly different equipment. Top speed reaches 201 km/h, but that’s not what’s asked of this type of machine. What’s asked is to eat up long kilometers with elegance. And there, the K 1600 B excels, with a mechanical nobility that its two-cylinder rivals simply cannot match.
