Overview
When Pesaro decides to play both sides at once, the result is a split range where each displacement coexists with its more sensible, less expensive, and theoretically more accessible counterpart. The Benelli TNT 899 Cafe Racer is exactly this logic applied to the house café racer: same menacing silhouette as the 1130, same steel trellis frame and aluminum plates DNA, but 899cc under the skin and €11,795 on the order form. An elegant way to bring the beast within budget reach without betraying its character.

The design hasn't aged a day. That predatory insect snout, those sharp edges cutting through the air, that clip-on handlebar forcing the rider to lean forward the moment they sit down — all of it still works in 2010 as it did from day one. Benelli had the intelligence to transfer the visual strengths of the big brother onto this 899: underseat exhaust, lateral radiators flanking the engine block, carbon details here and there, and that openwork top yoke that consistently catches the eye. The mirrors bolted to the ends of the handlebars add a touch of café racer authenticity that leaves no one indifferent. Only the tachometer plays it straight without originality, a class gap in a machine that deserved better on that point. But parked in front of a café, the overall picture remains formidable.
In the saddle, the 50mm inverted fork and 120mm of travel at each end promise precise steering, and they deliver. The front end bites the road with a frankness that the 215kg wet weight doesn't truly compromise — provided you accept the terms: here, the rider works. This is not a condescending Japanese roadster that forgives everything; it's an Italian machine that demands commitment in exchange for sensations. The three-cylinder develops its 120 horsepower at 9,500 rpm with 88.3 Nm of torque available at 8,000 rpm, which provides a significantly more accessible powerband than the 1130. Power builds linearly, without the snap of the big brother, and that is precisely what makes this engine endearing on open roads. The claimed top speed of 230 km/h is never the objective; it's the way you get there that matters.
Against a Triumph Street Triple of the same era or a Ducati Monster 796, the positioning becomes clear. The Benelli plays the visual originality card where the Street Triple bets on versatility, and the Monster on myth. The 899 CR doesn't pretend to be sensible. In this segment, that's almost a virtue. You do, however, have to accept that reliability and finish quality don't rival what the Japanese deliver at this price point, and that regular maintenance — including the replacement of common components such as the spark plug cr9e vpe 1 / stock-nr. benelli tnt 899 cafe racer 11-12 — demands a dealer network that isn't always dense depending on the region.
This café racer speaks to the rider who knows what they want: a sharp machine, aesthetically coherent down to the last bolt, powered by a three-cylinder that sings true without tearing your wrists off. Not a first-license choice, but not reserved for acrobats either. The spartan comfort of the 820mm seat height and the forward-leaning position naturally filter the audience. This 899 is built for riders who choose their motorcycle the way one chooses a musical instrument: for its tone, flaws included.
