Overview
Now that Benelli no longer has large engines in its parts bank, either in displacement or character, it would seem that the Lion of Pesaro has calmed down. In terms of watts, certainly. But spurred on by the expression of Chinese investors, a machine is attempting a bluff, betting everything on form rather than touching bottom. Here is the 402 S, Benelli’s first roadster-cruiser, with hot-rod tendencies.
What places it in this category of vindictive machines? Its (too) strong resemblance to a certain Ducati XDiavel. Although the Benelli 402S multiplies style touches to give itself a unique identity, the overall impression is confusingly similar. The Italian brand will have to bear the reputation of copycat designers. A slap in the face for Benelli’s honor. However, the tubular steel trellis frame is quite different, with no monobrach, and an engine of a different dimension. The only common point between the 402S engine and the Ducati’s is the number of pistons. After that, it’s sand against iron. The Chinese inline twin announces barely less than 400 cm3 for a final power of 39.4 horsepower. Torque is within the displacement range, with 3.5 mkg. With such figures, the machine seems destined for an A2 license, but in reality, it plunges into a much larger market in emerging countries. Regardless of the watts; with that look, it seems destined for a beautiful career... in the Far East.
Most of the elements of the cycle part enhance the picture. Because the equipment is rather high for a machine of this displacement. A 41 mm inverted fork, 3 brakes in total – 260 mm at the front with 4-piston axial calipers and 240 mm at the rear with a double-piston caliper – a reasonable weight of 160 kilos. The 402S seems to disregard insults. It encourages its rider to an attitude of cruising and style, with the feet placed forward, a long 16-liter tank, a minimalist rear and a fully LED look, itself hidden in a very... old-generation Duke 125/390 headlight.
We will not revisit the collapse of Benelli’s memory that the brand’s owners seem to ignore. Let’s try to define what the 402 S is. A motorcycle to mark the eye and flatter the rider in the streets of Bombay, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong or Chongqing. Consider it as a 400 and it will be flattering; see it as a Benelli and you will be disappointed.
