Overview
Seventeen thousand motorcycles per day. Not per month, not per week. Per day. That’s the rate at which Hero Motocorp supplies its domestic Indian market, a staggering figure when you consider that Harley-Davidson, a global icon if ever there was one, struggles to sell 11,000 per month. These two universes have nevertheless crossed paths, as the American giant has entrusted Hero with the production of its X440. And evidently, this collaboration has given ideas to the Delhi-based manufacturer, who is now arriving in Europe with the Hunk 440.

3,488 euros. Take the time to reread that figure. For this price, most 125cc motorcycles on the market will barely give you your money’s worth. The Hunk 440, on the other hand, features a genuine 440cc engine, a steel trellis frame, 43mm inverted forks, Bybre double disc brakes, a color TFT instrument panel with smartphone pairing, LEDs everywhere, ABS, and a five-year warranty. Only Mash, with its aging Five Hundred born more than a decade ago, flirts with this price level, but with technology that smells of naphthalene.
Don’t look for an adrenaline rush from this air-cooled single cylinder. With its two valves, a compression ratio of 9.65:1 and a bore-stroke of 79.6 x 88.4 mm, the engine delivers 27 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 36.3 Nm at 4,000 rpm, exactly what is needed to navigate a city without stress and venture onto back roads on weekends. Compared to a Triumph Speed 400 or a KTM 390 Duke, which play in a different league in terms of responsiveness, the Hero seems wise. But this wisdom has a geographical logic: a motorcycle designed to navigate the chaos of Mumbai or Bangalore doesn’t need 50 horsepower. This engine is sized for real-world use, not for flattering specification sheets.

The style is not universally appreciated, and that’s putting it mildly. The inverted forks stand out well, the roadster proportions are consistent, but the crash bars fitted as standard question the design office’s aesthetic choices. On this point, Hero has sufficiently distanced itself from the Harley X440, its platform twin, by reworking the fuel tank, seat, wheels, exhaust and fairing flanks. The two motorcycles share genes without really resembling each other. What is certain is that the Hunk 440 will quickly find owners who will take out their tools to customize all of this.

What the specification sheet doesn’t say clearly enough: 187 kg all full weighs on a 27 horsepower, it’s a ratio that requires a bit of finesse, especially for a beginner. The 6,000 km service interval will also be worth monitoring for maintenance budget. In exchange, the 13.5 liters of tank and a top speed announced at 150 km/h make it a machine capable of crossing the border for an escapade. This Hunk 440 is clearly aimed at those who want an affordable first large displacement motorcycle, or a second motorcycle without any headaches. Hero hits hard for its entry into Europe, and this 440 looks less like a finished product than a statement of intent.
