Overview
The RSV4... The superbike-derived road bike. The one that brought the title to Noale in 2010 and reclaimed it in 2012. A track-dedicated tool with near-dreamlike interaction, and a delirious V4 that casts a spell. Does it need anything more today?
More than ever, as the competition strives for ingenuity to secure a place at the top of the podiums. Aprilia’s hypersport received a significant boost to its potential in 2013. Its engine gains breath: the redesigned exhaust and refined electronic management allow for an additional 4 horsepower; the track machine now develops 184 horsepower at 12,500 rpm. Torque also increases, displaying a maximum of 117 Nm at 10,500 rpm.
On the front wheel, a discerning eye will have noticed the Brembo M430 monoblock calipers; more difficult but nonetheless notable, the radial master cylinder and radial caliper are new as well. Yet, what you’ve most likely noticed is this small toothed track. Like the CBR 1000 RR, the S 1000 RR, the ZX-10R, or the Ducati 1199 Panigale, and soon all other circuit monsters, the RSV4 Factory is equipped with ABS. Specifically, the Bosch 9MP system. Entirely lightweight (approx. 2 kilos), it is deactivatable and adjustable on 3 levels: - Level 1 / Track: mode optimized for the track. It acts on both wheels and works to achieve the best possible performance. - Level 2 / Sport: The anti-lock acts more progressively by combining the front and rear braking. - Level 3 / Rain: More intrusive, it is configured for low-grip conditions.
To accommodate this ABS, Aprilia revised the tank and even managed to increase its capacity: from 17, it can now hold 18.5 liters. Ergonomics also improve, with a few adjustments and a lower seat.
Each mapping of the Bosch 9MP can be combined with the 3 engine management modes, to create a personalized dynamic behavior. And to give its best, the RSV4 retains and updates its APRC, which includes: -ATC: the anti-slip, adjustable on 8 positions, manages the torque and optimizes traction as much as possible. -AWC: the anti-wheelie. Also adjustable, it allows you to get the maximum from the available acceleration without wasting energy in wheelies. -ALC: A launch control system allowing for rocket-like starts. You open the throttle wide, and at the top, you simply release the clutch for the bike to manage the optimum acceleration all by itself. Again, there’s room for adjustment; 3 levels are possible. -AQS: The Aprilia quickshifter, which allows you to change gears with a blip of the toes without releasing the throttle or engaging the clutch. The electronics of the Aprilia Performance Ride Control benefit from an update reinforcing its efficiency.
Let’s not forget the superb elements of the chassis, the pride of this Factory edition. Engine positioning adjustable, Öhlins suspension, carbon fiber parts, forged rims, perimeter aluminum frame derived from Aprilia’s experience in 250 GP (a whopping 18 world titles). The 1000 RSV4 remains a superb machine, with a level of efficiency at the top of the category. Monobloc calipers, forged aluminum rims, superb V4 with adjustable position in the chassis, and multiple injection maps. The RSV4 Factory APRC also retains the small updates that the SE had brought, namely a frankly less ugly and much more slender exhaust, a 200 mm wide rear tire, and optimized gearbox ratios.
