Overview
Do you remember the era when 450 four-strokes revolutionized everything? The 2012 Yamaha YZ 450 F is a bit of a condensed version of that revolution, a machine that definitively buried the idea that a large single-cylinder had to be lazy and heavy. Weighing in at 111 kg fully fueled, it almost seems to be lying on the scales, as its agility on the track seems to contradict this already very respectable figure. It’s far from a tractor; it’s the Swiss Army knife of motocross, tailored for pure competition.

The secret lies in this inverted engine architecture, literally. This 449.7 cm³ single-cylinder is tilted rearward, with the intake at the front and the exhaust at the rear. The result? A diabolically effective mass centralization that transforms the bike into a real cornering maniac. The mass is concentrated in the middle of the vehicle, making transfers more predictable and direction changes disconcertingly lively. This is a philosophy that Yamaha has refined over the years, up to the recent 2020 or 2024 Yamaha YZ 450 F models, but the solid foundations were already there in 2012.
On the handlebars, you immediately feel that this Yamaha YZ 450 F is not a machine for beginners. The injection, reworked for this year, delivers its power with a throttle response that is sometimes brutally frank. There is no latency phase; the torque is there, immediate, demanding engaged and precise riding. The 310 mm of travel at both ends, inverted fork and mono-shock, swallow bumps with remarkable aplomb, offering stability in a straight line and grip in roots that inspires insane confidence. The braking, with its 250 mm front disc, is in keeping: powerful and modulable, it allows you to shave milliseconds off each late braking maneuver.

Compared to its rivals of the time, the Honda CRF450R or the KTM 450 SX-F, the YZ stood out for this very particular feeling, this almost intuitive handling once you’ve tamed its lively character. It demands from the rider, it’s an obvious fact. Its 6.2-liter tank reminds you that it is made for intense sessions, not for leisurely rides. And then there’s the size, with a seat height of 999 mm, which requires a certain physical stature. This is not a bike for small builds.

So, who is it for today? For an experienced rider, a lover of sensations and precise mechanics, who is looking for a solid competition base or a mount for leisure circuit riding. Its price at the time, 8699 euros, made it a serious investment. Today, the price of a 2012 Yamaha YZ 450 F in France on the used market will obviously be much more accessible, but it is important to keep in mind that it is a machine that is demanding in terms of maintenance. For those who would like to get a little more fire out of it, adding a racing exhaust, such as an Akrapovic Yamaha YZ 450 F, was a classic. But even in stock form, it remains a weapon, a concentrate of technology that marked its time and continues to make pilots who like the bike to respond a quarter turn smile.
