Overview
Can a motocross bike be too sophisticated? When you look at the Yamaha YZ 450 F, that question immediately comes to mind. Here, it’s no longer a simple, powerful single-cylinder engine, but a concentration of technology where every gram has been scrutinized for the track. The 2022 version, with a weight of 111 kg fully fueled, displays a slight weight gain compared to its predecessor, but that’s the price to pay for reworked suspension and a reinforced transmission. At nearly €9,500, it plants its flag in the high-end segment, a territory where only serious riders dare to venture.

Under the aluminum double cradle frame, the heart beats strong. The 449.7 cm3 single-cylinder engine, with its reverse cylinder head and rearward-tilted cylinder, is a lesson in packaging. It delivers 55 horsepower, a power that only makes sense if it’s exploitable. That’s where Yamaha’s genius lies. The secret weapon is the Power Tuner. Via a smartphone app, you modify the injection and ignition mapping in real time. Dry a corner? Soften the response on a muddy surface? The switch on the handlebar allows you to switch from one map to another with a single click. Compared to a KTM 450 SX-F or a Husqvarna FC 450, the Yamaha YZ 450 F relies on this connectivity to offer an unprecedented degree of personalization, a real advantage for the rider who understands the technology.
This quest for mass centralization is obsessive. The exhaust snakes around the engine block, the muffler is moved forward, and the 6.2-liter fuel tank is sculpted to avoid interference. The result is that this 111 kg machine changes direction with disconcerting liveliness. The KYB inverted fork and the single shock absorber, with their generous travel (310 mm at the front, 317 mm at the rear), swallow jumps and roots without a murmur. You can feel that everything has been thought out for the stopwatch: the electric starter, the launch control system (LCS) for perfect starts, and even the inclined radiators for optimal cooling. It’s a war machine, period.

For whom? Clearly not for the beginner. The seat height of 965 mm, the explosive power, and the sensitivity of the settings make it a demanding machine. It targets the seasoned track rider, the one who spends his Saturdays on circuits and knows that an ignition advance adjustment can change a corner exit. It is also a choice platform for the preparer, with an active used market where prices for a 2019 or 2020 Yamaha YZ 450 F can interest riders with a tighter budget. Lovers of beautiful mechanics may add an Akrapovic muffler for the finishing touch, but the essentials are already there.

Ultimately, this 2022 Yamaha YZ 450 F makes no concessions. It is expensive, technical, and requires total involvement. But on a circuit, when the engine breathes deeply and the chassis hugs every contour, it offers sensations of pure efficiency. It’s not the lightest on the grid, but it’s undoubtedly one of the smartest. Proof that in the very physical world of motocross, electronic refinement and mass placement now make the difference.
