Overview
Do you remember the Virago 1100, that large Japanese twin that was trying to play in the Harley’s yard? In 2001, Yamaha put its old chopper away and released the Drag Star Classic, a motorcycle that immediately clarified its positioning. It’s no longer an attempt at imitation, it’s a statement. Yamaha takes the basics of the Virago – its large 1063 cm3 V2 – and gives it a new frame, a new silhouette, and above all, a new philosophy. The Drag Star doesn’t just want to be beautiful and heavy, it also wants to be a little playful.

The engine is known, but reworked. With 62 horsepower at 5750 rpm, it doesn’t aim for power records, but its torque of 85 Nm available from 2500 rpm is the main argument. This 265 kg dry weight motorcycle starts and moves forward without ever needing to whip the mechanics. It’s a cruiser engine, polished, that growls without shouting. Shaft drive is a blessing for maintenance, even if the gearbox, especially in first gear, can be a little noisy and mechanical. The 17-liter tank recalls that this motorcycle is made for rides, not for continental crossings.
But where the Drag Star Classic really stands out from many of its custom competitors is in its dynamic behavior. Yamaha paid particular attention to the chassis. The 41 mm fork and the mono-shock work together to offer real comfort and, surprisingly, very safe handling. You can feel that the engineers wanted this motorcycle to be ridden, not just displayed. The brakes, a double disc at the front and a single at the rear, are effective and even allow for a little fun in the curves. For a custom with a wheelbase of 1645 mm and a seat height of 710 mm, it’s remarkable agility.
This motorcycle clearly targets the touring rider who wants cruiser style without excessive compromises. It is more agile and less static than a Harley in the same segment, and its price of 9500 euros at the time positioned it as a serious alternative. However, it is not perfect. The passenger, with its limited suspension, may find long journeys a little uncomfortable. And the maximum speed of around 167 km/h confirms that it is made for the pleasure of riding, not for pure performance.
The XVS 1100 Drag Star Classic therefore represents an interesting moment for Yamaha. It proves that the Japanese manufacturer could create a custom that had character, a real temperament, and that did not sacrifice everything to aesthetics. It is a motorcycle that allowed many to discover the world of cruisers without feeling trapped by an image. It is pleasant, sometimes surprising, and above all, it remains a credible option for those looking for a large twin custom with a touch of Japanese dynamism in a very American style.
