Overview
Do you remember the time when a custom motorcycle had to be heavy, sluggish, and exclusively concerned with style? The 2004 Drag Star 1100 Classic, however, seems to have listened at the doors of Yamaha’s sport department. It’s not an aesthetic revolution, that’s clear. It retains the tried-and-tested codes of the low rider: a long wheelbase, a forward-sloping seat, and that large V-twin engine that cheerfully fills the frame. But the surprise comes when you’re in the saddle.

Beneath its appearance of a laid-back bad boy, this Japanese motorcycle hides a temperament much more lively than its ancestors. The engine, a 1063 cm³ unit inherited from the Virago but reworked, delivers its 85 Nm of torque from 2500 rpm, offering brisk acceleration and pleasant suppleness. It’s far from the fury of a sportbike, but for riding through hills or navigating dense traffic, it is fully sufficient and terribly civilized. The real shock comes from the chassis. The 41 mm fork and the monoshock offer a setting that finds a rare compromise in the category: correct comfort for long straight stretches, and handling that inspires confidence in corners. You can even afford to push the pace a little, a feeling unthinkable on many of its competitors from the time.
This dynamic pleasure is reinforced by effective braking, with its dual front disc, which allows you to dose without anxiety. With a dry weight of 261 kg and a seat height of 69 cm, it is accessible and reassuring, an ideal candidate for a rider wanting to move up to a large-displacement custom without being intimidated. The price at the time, around 9500 euros, positioned it as a serious and well-finished option compared to the average American motorcycle.
However, all is not perfect in the land of chrome. Yamaha clearly put the budget into the mechanics and the suspension, at the expense of certain details. The gearbox, especially in first gear, is sometimes noisy and unrefined, recalling with a crash its utilitarian origins. And the passenger? Forget long trips as a duo. The rear seat, purely cosmetic, is a punishment for anyone exceeding ten kilometers. It’s a selfish motorcycle, designed for the pleasure of the rider alone.
Ultimately, this Drag Star 1100 Classic is an atypical custom. It will appeal to those looking for a low rider look without sacrificing a minimum of road comfort. It proves that you can have chrome and character, without necessarily sacrificing driving pleasure on the altar of pure looks. Perhaps that is its greatest strength: having infused a motorcycle soul into a custom body.
