Overview
We remember a time when Japanese factories lined up 1,600cc V-Twins to challenge Milwaukee. Today, the landscape has changed considerably. In this custom market where American giants reign supreme, the Japanese have chosen a different path: agility and simplicity. That's where the Yamaha XV 950 R Bolt, often sought after on the used market, finds its place. It doesn't try to crush the competition with liters of displacement, but rather to seduce it with a strong character and a price tag under €10,000.

Its engine, a 942cc V2, is a statement of intent. With only 52 horsepower, one might think of a lifeless machine. Don't be fooled. It's the torque, generous at 79.4 Nm from 3000 rpm, that deserves attention. Yamaha even dared to remove the balance shaft and mount the engine rigidly in its steel frame. The result? Frank vibrations, a deep sound, a raw sensation that gets close, without equaling it, to the authenticity of a large American twin. It's a bold gamble in an often sanitized universe, and that's what makes this motorcycle so appealing.
The R version stands out with cartridge-style shocks that soften the compromise, standard ABS, and a refined look with its "suede" seat. But the real message is in the attitude. With a 69 cm seat height, a fuel tank of only 12 liters and a weight of 251 kg, the Bolt R is a maneuverable custom, made for the city and small winding roads. It directly dialogues with the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883, but with a different philosophy: less pretension, more mechanical accessibility, and a chassis that is more forgiving to beginners.
Is it the perfect custom? No. The braking, although ABS equipped, lacks bite, the forks are basic, and the range is limited. But that would be missing the point. The Yamaha XV 950 R Bolt is an honest machine, which embraces its stripped-down and mechanical side. It is aimed at the rider who wants an authentic bobber style without the hassles of complex mechanics, or at those looking for a solid base for customization projects. On the used market, it often represents an excellent value for money. It's not a specs bike, it's a feeling bike. And on that ground, it scores points.
