Overview

Picture a younger sibling who refuses to stay in the shadow of their elder. That's exactly the stance of the Vulcan 900 Light Tourer, this custom from Akashi that isn't content with just circling the block. Where the 1700 Nomad plays the chubby adventurer and the Voyager embraces its status as a two-wheeled yacht, the youngest of the family borrows the same score, in an acoustic-chamber version. Kawasaki has grafted onto it a complete touring pack, with sissy bar, auxiliary lights, generous windshield and two leather saddlebags of 15 liters each. The transformation is coherent, almost touching in its desire to imitate the elders.

Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Light Tourer

Beneath the 20-liter tank, the 903 cc V-twin plays the torque card rather than the horsepower one. With 48 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 78.5 Nm from 3700 rpm, we're dealing with an engine that pushes from below, sighs up top, and settles for a peaceful cruising rhythm. The announced top speed of 180 km/h remains theoretical, because no one pushes a 282 kg fully fueled custom into that zone without paying for it in arms and lower back. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive prioritize smoothness, which fits the Sunday-ride spirit more than intensive mileage-gobbling.

On the chassis front, the double steel cradle and the 41 mm fork with 150 mm of travel do the job without revolution. The rear monoshock, for its part, settles for 100 mm, and you feel it quickly with loaded luggage and a passenger on the sissy bar. The seat perched at 680 mm remains one of the machine's major arguments, ideal for smaller builds or riders starting out in the custom world who dread tip-toeing at red lights. The braking, on the other hand, shows its age with a single 300 mm disc up front and a two-piston caliper. For 282 kg loaded, you'd like a bit more bite, especially against a Harley Sportster 883 or a Yamaha XVS950 that play in the same league.

At 9799 euros, the price has the merit of being straightforward. That's more than 6000 euros below the 1700 Nomad, which admittedly offers about twenty additional horsepower and nearly 5 mkg more torque, but which calls for a different budget license. Against a more accessible Honda Shadow 750 or the Sportster that banks on the badge, the Vulcan 900 Light Tourer carves out a coherent niche, that of the turnkey equipped custom, without extra bills at the dealership to turn the bike into a tourer.

The verdict can be summed up in a few words. This Kawasaki revolutionizes nothing, doesn't try to chase the spec sheet of bigger displacements, and that's precisely its strength. It's aimed at the occasional traveler, the couple who want to get away for a weekend on back roads without breaking the bank, at the rider discovering the custom world who prefers a docile machine to a 350 kg behemoth. Its limits are assumed, its standard equipment avoids hidden costs, and its calm temperament makes it an honest companion. Not a reference, but a credible gateway into the world of light V-twin touring.
