Overview

Who said long-distance travel was reserved for big-bore machines? Kawasaki responds with a mischievous wink by dressing its VN 900 in a complete touring kit, giving it a second life under the Light Tourer Deluxe moniker. The little brother of the 1700 plays the imitator and, frankly, it pulls off this stylistic exercise rather well. A generous windshield, a sissy bar to support the passenger, auxiliary lights, and two 15-liter leather saddlebags round out the package. Curiously, the mid-size even boasts more comprehensive equipment than its elder sibling, as if Kawasaki were trying to compensate for the size difference with a wealth of accessories.

Kawasaki VN 900 Light Tourer Deluxe

Beneath the saddle, perched just 680 mm above the asphalt, sits the 903 cc V-twin that powers the entire VN 900 range. A docile engine, delivering 54 horsepower at 6000 rpm and, more importantly, 82.4 Nm from 3500 rpm. On paper, that seems modest for pushing 282 kg fully fueled, but this is precisely the philosophy of the mid-size custom: you don't chase stopwatches, you savor the ride. The belt replaces the chain, the 5-speed gearbox works through its ratios without haste, and the advertised top speed of 180 km/h remains largely theoretical as soon as you deploy the bags into the wind.

The picture gets interesting when you pull out the calculator. At 10,199 euros, this VN 900 Light Tourer Deluxe positions itself nearly 5,000 euros below its big brother the 1700, which nonetheless delivers about twenty additional horsepower and far more generous torque. Against direct competitors, notably the Yamaha XVS 950 or the Suzuki Intruder C800, the Kawasaki plays the complete-package card. The buyer doesn't have to break the bank on aftermarket accessories to turn their custom into a weekend machine—everything comes standard, which significantly changes the equation.

On the road, you have to contend with the 253 kg dry weight and accept that the modest power makes itself clearly felt on climbs or with a loaded pillion. The 41 mm telescopic fork with 150 mm of travel filters imperfections adequately, but the rear mono-shock, limited to 100 mm, quickly reaches its limits on rough roads. Braking, handled by a single 300 mm front disc pinched by a two-piston caliper, does the job without shining, while European competitors now offer dual discs and ABS as standard. The 20-liter tank allows for reasonable stages, nothing more, especially since the cruising position forces you to manage wind exposure.

So who is this custom disguised as a tourer aimed at? The rider just entering the segment, drawn in by a reassuring low seat and polished presentation, or the pure cruiser enthusiast who wants to travel light without investing in a big-bore machine. Track-day riders will pass, and so will highway-devouring mile-eaters. But for anyone dreaming of Sunday rides with a partner, winding back roads taken without urgency, and a refined look that borrows from the vocabulary of the great American machines, the gamble is rather well crafted. What remains is accepting that this mini road king fully embraces its supporting role alongside the heavyweights of the segment.
