Overview
We often talk about objects of desire, unique pieces that make collectors dream. But here is a machine that takes the concept much further: it’s not just a custom bike, it’s a manifesto, a statement of intent signed by the artisans of Auto Fabrica, and validated by Yamaha. The XSR 900 Yard Built Type 11 is the result of this rare alchemy between the avant-garde and retro, a motorcycle that dares to mix the soul of a modern three-cylinder engine with the aesthetic codes of the 1970s. When you know that the CP3 engine delivers 115 horsepower and 87 Nm of torque, you understand that the base is solid, almost too generous for a simple exercise in style. But precisely, Auto Fabrica didn’t do anything by halves.

The story of this model is a tale in three acts, almost a saga. It all begins with Prototype One, a pure track beast, freed from all road constraints. Öhlins, Brembo, BST carbon rims… the list of components will make any self-respecting track rider salivate. Then came Prototype Three, built on a historic XS 750 base, to explore the road-legal path with a reinterpreted seventies style. And finally, Prototype Two, the one that interests us here, is the perfect synthesis: it takes the chassis and explosive mechanics of the modern XSR 900, and grafts the minimalist and worked aesthetics of the previous two creations onto it. The result? A motorcycle that seems to have come straight out of a retro science fiction film, with its round headlight, hand-shaped aluminum bodywork, and flowing lines that conceal a 115-horsepower monster.
Technically, it’s substantial, in every sense of the term. The die-cast aluminum frame of the standard XSR is present, but it is dressed in unique parts, such as a quick-fill competition fuel tank, a handmade 3-in-1 exhaust system, and a host of 3D-printed nylon-carbon details. The Öhlins fork and shock absorber, coupled with Brembo radial braking, promise a much more sporty behavior than that of a classic neo-retro. We are clearly on a machine that is not just meant to look good in a garage: it is designed to be ridden with verve, to transform every journey into an experience. At €18,000, the price is obviously prohibitive, but it is a strictly limited series, sold to order. You don’t buy a simple motorcycle, you acquire a piece of mechanical craftsmanship, a piece of contemporary custom history.
So, who is this rare pearl for? Certainly not for the average motorcyclist looking for a daily routine. It is a piece for a demanding collector, for the aesthete who has the means to combine raw performance and radical design. It speaks to those who see in a motorcycle more than just a means of transport: an object of contemplation, a moving sculpture. Compared to a Triumph Thruxton R or a Ducati Scrambler Café Racer, the Type 11 plays in another league, that of unique pieces where price is no longer really the issue. Its strength? Having managed to preserve the aggressiveness of the Yamaha three-cylinder engine while enveloping it in bodywork that seems timeless. Its weakness? Its very exclusivity, which makes it inaccessible to the common mortal. But after all, perhaps it is better that way: some legends are meant to be admired from afar.
