Overview

Let's be honest, the previous 900 Tracer was perfectly capable of touring. And touring where you can have fun as soon as the road turns a bit, or even a lot.

The main limitations, or flaws, were the hard seat and the luggage available as an accessory; semi-rigid saddlebags that weren't particularly top-notch for departing serenely to other regions. The new 900 Tracer does better but... something is still missing to tip it over into the horizon. And that's where the Tracer 900 GT brings out some strong arguments. Better equipped, more stylish, more capable of tackling long distances, this long-range crossover is tempting in more ways than one.

So be careful, don't jump to what might seem like an obvious conclusion: this isn't a Tracer with a luggage kit. Yamaha has gone much further, to make it a more stylish and accomplished motorcycle than that simple conclusion. The GT clearly aims to be more high-end. And you can feel it right away when you get on board with the beautiful color TFT screen. It displays no more information than the rich double screen of the 900 Tracer std, but it looks really good. It is controlled from a wheel on the right handlebar control module. Then, the luggage. Matching the color of the motorcycle, they have a capacity of 22 liters but, above all, they attach to the rear part anchorages much more easily and elegantly than the bastard kit optional on the old Tracer. And if you have FJR luggage lying around in the garage, you can swap them to increase the cargo capacity.

Heated grips? Essential. The 900 Tracer GT thinks about comfort but also about sport and cruising thanks to the joys of electronics. Want to have fun? The 115 hp CP3 doesn't ask for anything better than to yelp and take you at an forbidden but so good rhythm. A quickshifter assists the gearbox to upshift gears with a boot. Then, when the road becomes more elongated, we can call on another friend, the cruise control. It comes from the MT-10. Controlled from the left handlebar control module, it operates from the 4th to the 6th gear, in a speed range between 50 and 180 km/h. A brake, clutch or accelerator and it deactivates.

Where the 900 Tracer GT scores another serious point is on the suspension side. The fork becomes fully adjustable and the rear shocker moves its preload adjustment via a wheel easily accessible under the pilot's seat. The motorcycle can then be better recalibrated when the crew or the mood changes. The GT can then take advantage of all the improvements that Yamaha has brought to the 900 Tracer classic, such as the revisited protection, the revised handlebar, the refined style, the improved saddles. And the preserved qualities of the old one, namely the lively 3-cylinder engine, the 3 injection maps and the 3-level traction control, the 18 liters of the tank for long stages, the center stand and the 12V socket.

With the 900 Tracer GT, Yamaha offers a very tempting touring machine that will know how to have fun on demand. The equipment is rich and rewarding even if some points could be improved. It only lacks a comfortable seat and a larger screen to be truly top-notch. On the other hand, the price will be of a higher caliber and this Tracer will no longer be as accessible as the base version. We will almost go so far as to say that it is not the most important thing. Because the missions that this GT-crossover can accomplish will not fail to attract more than just curious onlookers.
