Overview
The 700 Ténéré has seen a number of variations. Extreme, Explore, World Raid... and also a Rally version, consisting of a set of additional parts and a specific color scheme. Since 2025, this designation has returned but with more assertive ambitions. Be warned, a desire for action at the end of the knobs!
The "T7R" has liked the Speedblock color scheme since 2020. It must be said that it is steeped in history. It has been found in GP racing for a long time, and since the late 1970s on XT 500s entered (and victorious) in the Paris-Dakar Rally. Yes, back then, you could enter the world's largest rally with a 30 horsepower trail bike and aim for good placements.
To mark its origins, the Ténéré Rally features the same graphics as the 1983 600 Ténéré ancestor. An oasis blue peninsula, a few patches of yellow, the Speedblock squares on the sides, gold rims - only a blue-painted frame and fork boots are missing to perfect the mimicry.
From the standard T7, the Rally adds a raised front fender, a more robust 4 mm thick skid plate, a specific seat with 15 mm of additional padding, wider titanium-knurled footpegs (-228 gr), and raised suspension.
It's clear, this Yam' wants to tackle tougher trails. Its forks gain reinforced tubes and a special coating to reduce friction. With 20 mm of additional travel, the KYB suspension slides 23 cm at the front and 22 cm at the rear. Consequently, ground clearance increases to 255 mm. That's starting to be nice for venturing into complicated terrain. But don't expect to easily get on it. Its long legs raise its seat height to 910 mm. It's less severe than a YZ but you're going to have to arch, and quite a bit.
The T7 Rally also offers an additional specific "Raid" display mode, road-book styled to provide more adequate information during off-road outings. A small bonus that complements a richer endowment than before on the two versions of the 700 Ténéré. Its "phase 3" incorporates a little more electronics without tipping into excess.
A ride-by-wire throttle, two Riding Modes, switchable traction control, a larger color TFT screen (6.3 inches), new switchgear – that's what the T7s have gained in their evolution. This is in addition to the multi-mode ABS (Front and rear / front only / off) installed in 2023.
The Ténéré phase 3 is also recognizable by its rectangular eyes, more curved shoulders, a few subtle design tweaks, the repositioned tank and the modified clutch cover. Don't look for changes on the engine, it hardly moves at all. Yamaha retains the output of 73.4 horsepower and 7 mkg but a new air intake will bring a little more punch at low RPM.
The upgrades of the Rally version have a few consequences: 2 kilos extra with 210 units ready to ride and 1,200 euros more on the bill. You have to go through this to overcome those elements that the normal T7 cannot avoid. The Rally just wants to explore further.
