Overview
Imagine a custom motorcycle that decides to ditch its leather jacket for a racing suit. That’s precisely the gamble Yamaha took with the Road Star Warrior 1700 in 2006. While the segment was dominated by aesthetically imposing but often underpowered behemoths, Yamaha injected a massive dose of sporty DNA into this giant V2. The result? A machine that doesn’t just make noise; it wants to scrape through corners.

Its heart is a 1670 cm3 V-twin, boosted by fuel injection and reworked to deliver 86 horsepower and a monstrous 141 Nm of torque from 3500 rpm. These figures, at the time, almost made some sportbikes blush. But the real revolution is beneath the skin. Yamaha opted for an aluminum frame, lighter and more responsive than the traditional steel cradle. They then grafted on 41mm inverted forks and four-piston calipers directly from the R1, while the rear swingarm resembles that of a track machine. It’s no longer a custom pretending to be something it’s not; it’s a dragster dressed as a cruiser that has discovered the pleasure of curves.
On the road, the character of this Yamaha Road Star Warrior 1700 is twofold. Its engine is a marvel of civility at low rpm, with a smoothness of operation that masks its latent power. But as soon as you ask it for an effort, it responds with electric urgency, propelling its 297 kg fully fueled with an authority that surprises. The real miracle, however, is its dynamic behavior. Despite its weight and its 200-width rear tire, it leans into corners with disconcerting agility, offering firm handling and roll limits far higher than those of its competitors like the Honda VTX1800 or the Kawasaki Mean Streak. You almost forget it’s a custom.
But this versatility comes at a price, and it’s not just 13722 euros. The riding position remains that of a true cruiser: arms outstretched, feet forward, arched back. You’ll have the look of a bad boy, but your spine will quickly remind you that this Warrior is first and foremost a solitary machine, not very accommodating for long two-up rides. Its 15-liter tank confirms this vocation of intense but focused pleasure.
Yamaha has therefore created an exception here, a custom that does not sacrifice handling to aesthetics. It targets the rider who wants the imposing look and the deep sound of an American V2, but refuses to settle for a back-and-forth between two red lights. It's a machine for those who seek, within the Road Star family, the most sporty, the most capable of transforming a country road into a playground. An oddity that, even today, remains a reference for those who believe that power and agility can coexist on the same frame.
