Overview
Who can still claim that the Japanese inline-four has had its last word? With the 2024 vintage R1M, Yamaha continues to leave its mark on the hypersport segment, where every gram counts and every tenth of a second on track is won through cutting-edge engineering. This is not a motorcycle you come across at a red light on a Sunday morning. It is a precision instrument designed for riders who want to flirt with 300 km/h, the announced top speed of the 2024 Yamaha R1M 1000, with the rigor of a chassis built for the track.

Beneath the full carbon fiber fairing, the 998 cc inline-four produces 200 horsepower at 13,500 rpm and 113.8 Nm of torque at 11,500 rpm. Figures that place it neck and neck with the BMW S 1000 RR or the Ducati Panigale V4, its natural rivals. The 13:1 compression ratio and short-stroke design (79 mm bore, 50.9 mm stroke) betray an engine built to live in the upper rev range. Yamaha managed to preserve this output despite the transition to Euro5 standards, thanks to a revised exhaust system integrating four catalytic converters and internal optimizations that maintain the aggressive character of the engine. All this for 202 kg wet weight, a contained figure that owes much to the widespread use of carbon across the entire fairing and now on the rear subframe.
What truly sets the R1M apart from its standard R1 sibling is the Öhlins ERS semi-active suspension. The 43 mm pressurized inverted fork incorporates a gas anti-cavitation system that stabilizes damping, whether attacking curbs or under hard braking. The rear mono-shock follows the same philosophy, with adapted preload. Two operating modes are available to the rider: an automatic setting that continuously adjusts suspension response according to conditions, or a manual mode for those who prefer to fine-tune each parameter themselves without turning a single physical dial. It is a considerable advantage on track, where conditions change from one session to the next. The downside? One extra kilogram compared to the standard version. On the scales, that remains a very acceptable trade-off.
On the electronics front, Yamaha pulls no punches. The YRC Setting app allows customization of seven control systems, from traction control to engine brake management, including anti-wheelie and two-level cornering ABS. The rider builds their own riding maps much like tuning a racing simulator. More interesting still, the Y-TRAC system turns every track session into a debriefing: full telemetry, trajectory overlay on Google Maps, analysis of engine speed, lean angles, and acceleration phases. For improving on track, it is an asset that few competitors offer as standard. The aluminum Diamond perimeter frame, four-piston radial calipers on 320 mm discs, and 120/70-17 front and 200/55-17 rear tires complete a coherent package designed for pure performance.
The price must be addressed, because it is part of this motorcycle's identity: 27,999 euros. It is a steep entry ticket, especially since the R1M must be reserved at the dealership, with no option to simply walk in and ride away. This selective distribution policy, combined with the numbered badge engraved on each unit, reinforces the exclusive character of the machine. The Yamaha R1M is not aimed at the everyday rider or the beginner seeking thrills. It targets the demanding track rider, the one who has already worn through dozens of sets of tires and is looking for a machine capable of keeping up with their progression. With a 17-liter tank and a seat perched at 860 mm, it makes no concession to road comfort. It is a statement of intent, not a compromise.
