Overview
When a motorcycle is only available in a single colorway, the message is crystal clear: the curtain is about to fall. The 2014 Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer is playing extra time, faithful to a proven recipe that dates back to the first Fazer 1000 launched in the mid-2000s. And while this formula may seem dated next to the latest-generation GT roadsters, it still holds solid arguments for anyone seeking a versatile big-bore without breaking the bank.

Beneath the half fairing, the 998 cc inline four-cylinder borrows its foundation from the 2004-2005 R1 engine block, recalibrated for more road-oriented use. The result: 150 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and 105.9 Nm of torque available from 8,000 rpm. It's honest, generous, and the rev climb remains a genuine pleasure for fans of expressive engines. Fuel injection replaced the carburetor bank of the original FZS 1000, gaining smoothness at low revs. With a compression ratio of 11.5:1 and its five-valve-per-cylinder head, this engine takes its final bow without showing a single wrinkle. How much horsepower does the Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer have? One hundred and fifty, and every one of them is well-mannered.
The chassis deserves respect. The die-cast aluminum frame, inherited from the FZ6 philosophy but scaled up to handle the greater power, teams up with an inverted fork and a rear monoshock, each offering 130 mm of travel. The 320 mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers deliver serious stopping power for a machine that tips the scales at 220 kg wet and can reach 250 km/h. The 120/70-17 front and 190/50-17 rear tires provide a good compromise between highway stability and agility on twisty roads. However, the absence of standard ABS on this model year is regrettable — an feature that had become the norm among competitors, notably the Suzuki GSX-S1000F and the Kawasaki Z1000SX, which already offered this safety equipment.
The riding position, with a seat perched at 815 mm, will suit medium to tall riders. The 18-liter tank provides decent range for weekend rides. On the other hand, the ergonomics reveal a notable gap in the inner-thigh area that becomes tiring on long trips, and maneuverability falls short compared to the naked FZ1 version. The half fairing offers effective wind protection, but its design is starting to show its age against the sharper lines of its rivals. As for the price of a new Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer, it came in at 10,699 euros — a competitive price tag against the Japanese competition but hard to justify without modern electronic rider aids.
Today, it's on the used market that the Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer truly comes into its own. Models from 2006, 2007, or 2013 can be found at very affordable prices for a motorcycle capable of devouring miles with a rock-solid engine. The price of a used Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer varies depending on mileage and condition, but it remains one of the best value-for-money propositions in the GT roadster segment. It's aimed at experienced riders who want a reliable, powerful big-bore with no electronic frills. Not the most modern, not the most exciting on paper, but an honest motorcycle that gets the job done without complaint. And sometimes, that's exactly what you ask of it.
