Overview
When Yamaha decided to graft the four-cylinder engine from its 2004–2005 R1 into a faired roadster, the message was clear: the Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer would be no ordinary tourer. Introduced in 2006 and carried over virtually unchanged through the 2010 model year we're looking at here, this machine plays the muscular sport-touring card with an engine that delivers 150 horsepower at 11,000 rpm. One hundred and fifty. In a semi-faired roadster weighing 220 kg wet. We're a long way from a leisurely adventure bike or a mild-mannered twin for the daily commute. The 105.9 Nm of torque available from 8,000 rpm ensures strong mid-range acceleration, and the electronic fuel injection, which replaced the carburetor bank of the old FZS 1000, provides a noticeably sharper throttle response. For anyone wondering how much horsepower the Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer has, the answer alone sets the scene.

The chassis is no afterthought. The die-cast aluminum frame borrows an architecture similar to the FZ6's, but resized to handle the extra horsepower. Inverted fork, reinforced swingarm, dual 320 mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers: Yamaha spared no expense on the running gear. The wheels, inherited from the R1 lineage, help keep the dry weight under the 200 kg mark. On the road, this translates into an agility you wouldn't necessarily expect from a machine of this displacement. The 815 mm seat height remains accessible to most riders, and the 18-liter tank allows for decent stints between fuel stops. Compared to a heavier Suzuki Bandit 1250 or a less powerful Honda CB1000R, the Fazer strikes a sport-comfort balance that's hard to beat in this segment.
The styling is divisive, and deliberately so. The half fairing with its tapered headlight gives the 2007 or 2006 Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer a family resemblance to the FZ6, only more imposing. The unconventionally shaped exhaust catches the eye and stands apart from the competition's conventional outlets. It's not the most crowd-pleasing design in Yamaha's lineup, but it has the merit of asserting real character. On the used market, the Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer remains a safe bet: proven mechanical reliability from the R1 engine freed from its sportbike constraints, reasonable maintenance with chain drive and a six-speed gearbox. Model years 2006 through 2013 trade at attractive second-hand prices, making it an appealing entry point into the versatile big-bore category.
What is the price of a new Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer? At launch, it was listed at 11,399 euros, a competitive position against the Japanese sport-GTs of the era. Today, it's on the used Yamaha FZ1 1000 Fazer market that the machine truly comes into its own. For a rider who wants a roadster capable of devouring A-roads, filtering through city traffic thanks to its compact dimensions, and having fun on a twisty back road at the weekend, few motorcycles offer this much versatility at this price point. The dedicated track rider will find limitations in the non-adjustable front preload suspension and a weight that makes itself felt through tight sequences of corners. But that's not what it was built for. The FZ1 Fazer is aimed at the everyday rider who refuses to sacrifice sporty temperament on the altar of comfort. And on that front, it delivers on its promise with a mechanical generosity that only a 998 cc four-cylinder can provide.
