Overview
Can you really talk about adventure without a little dirt under the tires? That’s the question posed by the 2021 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally, a machine that clearly distances itself from pavement to target trails. Far from a simple update, this generation marks a strategic shift for Hinckley, with a new engine, a redesigned frame, and a more aggressive silhouette that buries the placid look of the previous 800. You're on an animal that displays its intentions at first glance.

The heart of the beast is this 888 cm³ three-cylinder engine, which on paper displays identical power of 95 horsepower. But don’t be fooled, the magic lies elsewhere. Triumph played with the firing order to give it more soul, and above all, moved the peak torque lower in the rev range. The 87 Nm arrives at 7250 rpm, and you feel this extra vigor from the mid-range, where it counts when the trail narrows. It’s more aggressive, more responsive, and makes all the difference compared to competition like the BMW F 850 GS Adventure. The engine is well-mounted in a new steel tubular frame, with a bolted aluminum rear subframe, a clever trick for repairs after a rather muscular fall.
Where the Tiger 900 Rally shows its fangs is in its off-road equipment. The Showa suspensions, with their 45 mm diameter at the front, offer generous travel (240 mm front, 230 mm rear) and are fully adjustable. A real pleasure to swallow potholes and small jumps. The Brembo Stylema brakes, coupled with an ABS optimized for lean angle, inspire absolute confidence, whether braking in a tight corner or on a slippery path. However, Triumph has opted out of original aluminum crash bars and engine guard, a questionable choice on a motorcycle with such an adventurous positioning. You’ll need to go through the options box, or aim directly for a used Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, to be prepared for anything.
With a 850 mm seat height, it remains accessible without being low, and its 20-liter tank promises beautiful ranges. The electronics are generous: 7-inch TFT screen, driving modes dedicated to off-road, full LED headlights, and even preparation for an optional bi-directional quickshifter. It’s a motorcycle that knows how to be civilized on the road while retaining its hunting instinct once the tarmac disappears. Its price, around 14,300 euros at the time, placed it in the yard of the greats. Today, whether you are looking for a 2022 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro or a 2021 model, the argument still holds.
This Tiger 900 Rally doesn’t do things by halves. It is aimed at the demanding globetrotter who spends more time on GPS tracks than on national roads, and who wants a machine capable of everything without complaining. It’s not the lightest, but its agility and temperamental engine more than compensate. It’s a serious, well-finished tool that has forged its reputation in the highly competitive world of adventure trails. For those who want authenticity without sacrificing modern comfort, it remains, even a few years later, a very, very seductive proposition.
