Overview
In 2012, Triumph unleashed its first big tiger into the maxi-trail jungle, hoping to scratch at the supremacy of the GS. A decade later, the feline has matured, but above all, it has radically changed its appearance. The Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro of 2022, and its 2023 and 2024 iterations, is not a simple evolution. It’s a mechanical and philosophical revolution, a machine redesigned to finally live up to the DNA of an adventure trail that wants to do everything, and do it well.

The first shock is the lightness. We’re talking about 249 kilograms all fueled up, a figure that resonates like a slap in the face for the older model, whose dry weight already flirted with that number. Triumph underwent surgical slimming, with a new more compact steel trellis frame, a clever Tri-Link rear swingarm, and a tailored fairing. As a result, the beast appears more agile, more feline, less high-set. It’s no longer a mammoth to be tamed, but an animal ready to pounce. The technical specifications of this new generation clearly indicate the direction: rediscovered agility.
Under this new suit, the heart beats stronger. Farewell to the old three-cylinder engine, make way for the 1160 cm3 T-Plane block, an engine that sings a unique symphony. With its 180, 270, 270-degree firing order, it combines the low-revving torque of a twin-cylinder with the raging howl of a three-cylinder in the upper rev range. The 150 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque are there to prove it. On the road, it’s a delight, with a force that exits the corner like a whip. Facing a BMW R 1250 GS, less powerful but more torquey in the mid-range, the Tiger clearly chooses character and liveliness. For the price of the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, around 22,600 euros, you buy this seasoned personality.
But a Rally Pro is made to leave the pavement. And there, Triumph has played its cards on the table. The semi-active Showa fork gains 20 mm of travel (220 mm), the front wheel is a 21-inch unit, and the seat height rises between 875 and 895 mm for an unobstructed view of the trails. Off-Road Pro mode cuts all assistance, delivering the beast to the rider’s pure instinct. The shaft drive, well protected by the swingarm, is a blessing for those who chain together salty kilometers. It’s a machine that inspires confidence in sand and gravel, even if its size remains imposing for narrow trails. It targets the adventurous touring rider who wants a credible tool on both sides of the ditch, not the pure off-road enthusiast.

In the cockpit, it’s the empire of technology. The 7-inch TFT dashboard is clear, the navigation system is intuitive, and heated grips are almost becoming standard. Triumph even pushes the luxury with a blind spot detector and backlit controls. The finish is exemplary, typical of the brand. To personalize the whole thing, the catalog of accessories for the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro is as vast as the Gobi Desert, from rigid luggage cases to engine guards. As for the Rally Explorer version, with its 30-liter tank, it is aimed at the conquerors of long crossings.

So, does this tiger finally have the fangs to dethrone the Bavarian queen? The competition is tight. The latest BMW R 1300 GS has further raised the bar in terms of versatility and density. The Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, on the other hand, relies on explosive engine character, an agile chassis, and a modern look that embraces its mechanics. It will not convince those seeking absolute ease or torque from the first revolutions. But for the rider who wants an adventurous bike with a sporty temperament, loaded with technology and ready to swallow both asphalt and trails, it constitutes an exciting and finally credible alternative. Opinions on the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro agree on one point: it’s the first time it has really scared the competition. For those who doubt, a guided test ride is a must.
