Overview

One often speaks of the Holy Grail in the world of maxi-adventure trail bikes, a perpetual quest to dethrone the queen. But is that really the objective? With this new Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer, Triumph seems rather to have drawn its own treasure map, a vehicle designed for expeditions that fully embraces its character without complex. The message is clear: here is a machine designed for wide-open spaces, ready to devour tarmac as well as trails, without compromising on comfort or technology.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer

Under the 30-liter fuel tank, which promises ranges that would make a touring airplane envious, beats a deeply revised triple-cylinder engine. 150 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque, figures that translate on the road into smooth but determined propulsion, typical of British three-cylinder engines. The real feat lies in the diet imposed on this beast: 25 kg less than the previous generation. You feel this new agility from the first bends, even with a fully-loaded weight of 261 kg. Compared to a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure, it is lighter, compared to a Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports, it is tougher and more powerful. Triumph plays its own game.

The Rally Explorer’s equipment borders on the indecent, to the point of making a visit to the options catalog almost superfluous. Everything is there, from the bi-directional quickshifter to the blind spot radar, through the semi-active Showa suspensions, Brembo Stylema brakes worthy of a sportbike, the heated seat and even an Off-Road Pro mode that cuts all aids for experienced riders. The 7-inch TFT screen and dedicated application transform the handlebars into a command post. It is a motorcycle that is not afraid of anything, designed for long-distance travel, whether it passes through the Atlas road or the national 7.

Who is it for? Clearly not for the novice. The seat height of 875 mm, even with the automatic lowering function, requires a certain stature. It is the mount of the demanding globetrotter, the one who sees the journey as an adventure in itself and for whom comfort and range are non-negotiable. It will also seduce the technology enthusiast, the one who likes to have all functions at hand. On the other hand, its price, around 24,000 euros, places it in the big leagues. It is a significant investment for a machine of this scale.

Ultimately, this Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer does not seek to be a simple alternative. It imposes its own universe, a blend of English tradition and cutting-edge technology, with a defined personality. It is less versatile for everyday use than a GS, less spartan than an Africa Twin. It is Triumph, simply. A test ride of the Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer, whether it is a 2023 model or a recent used one, is necessary to understand this unique proposition. It will not convince everyone, but for those who vibrate to its call, it represents the ultimate tool for transforming the map into territory.
