Overview
Imagine a motorcycle that claims to do everything, from the daily commute to transcontinental raids, to the most demanding dirt roads. That's the bold bet of the Triumph Tiger 1200 Explorer XCx Low, a machine that, in 2016, planted its flag in a territory already well occupied by BMW GS and other KTM Adventure models. With its 1215 cm3, this British triple delivers a power of 139 horsepower, a figure that immediately places it in the league of great adventure touring bikes. But the real subject is its torque of 123 Nm, available relatively low in the rev range, which promises smooth acceleration and a disconcerting ease, whatever the terrain.

However, it must be admitted that its dry weight of 251 kg is a burden. Even in its "Low" version with a 785 mm seat height, it remains a giant. In the city or in tight corners, you feel the mass. The 48 mm inverted fork and the electronically adjustable rear shock absorber do a remarkable job of smoothing out imperfections, but they don't perform miracles in the face of the laws of physics. It's a motorcycle that demands commitment, strength in the arms, and a certain anticipation. It is clearly not intended for beginners or lightweight riders. Its audience is experienced touring riders, those for whom travel takes precedence over pure agility, and who seek comfort and stability at high speed.
On the road, the three-cylinder engine is a marvel. It pulls linearly, with a raspy sound and a well-tempered character that is sometimes lacking in some overly polished competitors. The six-speed gearbox is precise, and the shaft drive brings that serenity and low maintenance so appreciated for long-distance touring. The braking, ensured by Brembo calipers at the front, is up to the task, offering power and modulation that inspire confidence even with this considerable weight. With a 20-liter tank and complete electronic equipment (traction control, different riding modes), the Tiger 1200 Explorer is an ultra-prepared travel companion.

So, to whom does it really appeal? To those who want a British alternative to the German monopoly, with more sonic character and an imposing presence. To those who prioritize the comfort of the rider and passenger over very long distances, and who are willing to make a few concessions in agility. For a price of around 18,000 euros at the time, it offered a very complete level of finish and equipment. It's not the most agile maxi-trail, nor the lightest, but it's a comfortable locomotive, designed to swallow continents without a murmur. A character proposition, reserved for riders who master their art and their strength.
