Overview
The 2007 Triumph Thruxton 900 is a statement, not just a motorcycle. Triumph, with its knack for nostalgia, has here sculpted a modern café racer, taking the Bonneville as a base and injecting it with a dose of stylistic aggression. It’s not an exact replica of the machines from the 1960s, but rather their idealized evolution, stripped of the mechanical quirks of the time. Its very name, Thruxton, is a direct tribute to a mythical English race and the Bonneville T120Rs prepared for the track.

The heart of the machine is a 865 cc vertical twin, developing 70 horsepower and a torque of 68.6 Nm. These figures, at the time, marked a clear evolution compared to the standard Bonneville, thanks to specific camshafts and carburetors. The power is there, but it is delivered with modern civility. The engine is supple, docile, and the five-speed gearbox operates smoothly. Perhaps the rough temperament of the ancestors is lost, but unprecedented reliability for a machine of this style is gained. Top speed is announced at 190 km/h, an honest figure, but the Thruxton 900 experience is lived elsewhere: in the deep sound of its exhausts, in the sensation of piloting an object steeped in history.
The technical specifications reveal a machine built with seriousness. The steel double cradle frame, the 41 mm telescopic fork, and the two lateral shock absorbers are designed for sporty use, but without excess. The wet weight of 227 kg is considerable, a mass that the chassis must manage. The geometry, modified to accentuate the café racer character, can make the motorcycle less stable at very high speeds compared to a more neutral Bonneville. But this is an assumed choice. The Thruxton is not a contemporary sport motorcycle. Its surprising agility comes in part from its relatively thin tires (100/90 front, 130/80 rear), which offer it a liveliness in corners that machines equipped with wider tires cannot have.

The riding position is authentically café racer: low handlebars, rear-set footpegs, a seat at a height of 790 mm. It is engaged without being torturous. The suspensions correctly filter imperfections without being soft. The braking, with a 320 mm disc at the front and a 255 mm disc at the rear, is effective, the front caliper doing most of the work. Vibrations, characteristic of twins, are present but better contained than on historical machines; they mainly manifest at high revs.
Today, a Triumph Thruxton 900 is mainly found on the second-hand market. Its new price was 8990 euros at the time, an investment for a very particular style. It is aimed at the rider who seeks café racer aesthetics without the compromises of a pure replica. It is a machine with character, ideal for stylish rides or customizations, with a wide market of specific accessories (handlebars, seats, silencers). It is not suitable for those seeking brute performance or absolute comfort. For the modern touring rider or track rider, it will be too limited. But for those who want an embodied retro style, reliable modern mechanics, and a unique presence, the Thruxton 900 remains a very attractive proposition. The bottle is superb, the intoxication is that of simple pleasure and assumed style.
