Overview

The café racer, that type of motorcycle that has inspired so much ink and gasoline since the 1960s, is it still viable today? Triumph attempted to answer with the Thruxton 900, launched in 2004 and modernized in 2008. It’s not a historical replica, but a machine that takes the Bonneville’s base and injects a bit of sporting spirit and a dose of carefully calculated nostalgia. The vertical twin engine of 865 cm³, fuel-injected since 2008 but styled like the carburetor era, develops 70 horsepower and 67.7 Nm of torque. Modest figures compared to modern sportbikes, but that’s precisely the point: we’re not seeking absolute performance, but atmosphere.

Triumph Thruxton 900

This engine is supple, docile, and rather reliable, an important point for those seeking a used Triumph Thruxton 900 without the hassles of older models. It vibrates, certainly, especially at high RPMs, but it’s a characteristic vibration, a mechanical signature. The five-speed gearbox is pleasant, and the chassis, with its dual cradle frame and 41 mm fork, offers surprising agility. This agility comes in part from the modest section tires, 100 at the front and 130 at the rear, which make the machine turn with a liveliness that sportbikes with large tires no longer know. The riding position is sporty, low handlebars and high footpegs, but not extreme. The seat at 790 mm in height is accessible, and the 16.6-liter tank promises decent rides.

However, the Thruxton 900 café racer doesn't create an illusion on all fronts. At high speed, its stability isn’t its strong point, a modified geometry for style giving it a sometimes nervous character. The braking, with a 320 mm disc at the front and a 255 mm disc at the rear, is correct without being impactful. And then there’s this engine. While its reliability is a major asset for a Triumph Thruxton 900 custom or daily use, some purists will regret its somewhat too-refined temperament. The intoxication of the old ones, their raw and unpredictable character, has been softened. The bottle, with its impeccably retro lines, is beautiful, but the contents may seem a little too wise to those seeking the soul of a true café racer.

Triumph Thruxton 900

The public for this machine is clear: the rider who wants the style without excessive compromises, the one who finds a Triumph Thruxton 900 new price around 9000 euros at the time and sees it as an alternative to standard roadsters. It suits the stylish urbanite, the globetrotter who prioritizes charm over speed, and especially the one who wants a base for modifications. The Triumph Thruxton 900 accessories market is rich, handlebars, seats, silencers, allowing the machine to be easily personalized. Compared to a modern Norton Commando or even the Japanese replicas, the Thruxton 900 defends itself through its brand authenticity and balance. It’s not the most radical sportbike, nor the most comfortable, but it offers a unique experience, a bridge between two eras. For a Triumph Thruxton 900 test ride, you leave with the feeling of having ridden a motorcycle with a history, even if that history has been somewhat rewritten for our time.
