Overview

Feet forward, grips locked onto the handlebars, the growl between your knees – here you sit atop a buffalo yet to be roused. All that’s needed now is to slap its… rear and crank the throttle wide open. The Rocket III GT Storm is roughly that; with an extra scoop of fury.

For 20 years, this machine has been a Hulk in the motorcycle microcosm. Powered by a massive 3-cylinder engine, it boasts the most phenomenal displacement and torque on the market. The previous version showed 167 horsepower and more than 22 mkg of torque. But that was before it became Storm. This attraction to the tempest swells the performance of the 2.5-liter engine. With work on the camshafts, valves, and compression ratio, the stable grows to 182!

9% more power. The Rocket III will require you to reach for its 15 extra horsepower a good 1000 rpm higher. Great, even more intoxication and vertigo as you rev it out while having your head ripped off. A little more torque too, 4 Nm. It even manages to meet Euro5b standards. And how do you brake?

As before. The Storm designation didn't come with major changes to the chassis. Only the wheels have changed: the redesigned rims are a kilogram lighter and fitted with Metzeler Cruisetec tires. Generous dimensions of 150 mm at the front and 240 at the rear go hand in hand with heavy-duty braking. 4-piston Brembo Stylema calipers work around 320 mm discs – that’s the same kit as on most hypersport machines. The rear is also substantial, with a 4-piston caliper for a large 300 mm disc. The aluminum frame, 47 mm inverted fork, and mono-shock anchored to the large swingarm have not changed.

The riding position hasn't either. Compared to the R Storm, the GT adopts a more relaxed posture. The handlebar further back (by 125 mm) and the feet in line with the hands impose a custom attitude. Its saddle is lower while the footpegs are adjustable in 3 positions, over 50 mm horizontally. The passenger seat is also more welcoming than on the R, with more padding and an adjustable sissy bar. Its front is more protective with a larger, transparent screen. A nice bonus: heated grips as standard.

Its increased power is accompanied by a change of tone for the Rocket III. The Dark takes up residence, with black finishing for the rear subframe, fork legs, all exhaust systems, the foot controls, the levers, the caliper supports, the headlight surround, and the center stand. A real thunderstorm this machine is. Lightning can only sparkle on the fuel cap, its steel belt, the "Rocket 3 GT" badge under the seat, and the few machined details on the engine.

What does the electronics say? Status quo. The basket was already well stocked. Rocket III models benefit from 4 Riding Modes (Road – Sport – Rain – configurable), lean-sensitive traction control, cornering ABS, full LED lighting, a keyless system, a double-theme color TFT dashboard, cruise control, backlit switches, a hill-hold assistant, and a USB port under the seat. The quickshifter is optional. As for other modules, it says why bother. A slip control? I don't ride on the track. A Launch Control? It would explode in less than two. A radar? It’s the others who push when I arrive. 320 kg projected by a catapult, it rips up the road.

With this Storm evolution, the Rocket III GT perpetuates its status as the most insane cruiser on the market. It’s a little more expensive than the R, a little more comfortable, but still as demonic when you provoke it.
