Overview
Ewan McGregor isn't just the favorite Jedi of a generation or the magnificent junkie from Trainspotting. He's also a dyed-in-the-wool motorcyclist, the kind who swallows continents on two wheels without flinching. Over 60,000 kilometers documented on camera, from Scotland to South Africa by way of Tierra del Fuego, mostly from the saddle of BMW GS Adventures. A globe-trotting track record that would put most weekend tourers to shame. So when Triumph decided to attach his name to the Bonneville 865 in 2008, the choice seemed logical. Except this McGregor edition looks nothing like any other special series in the British catalog.

The reason is simple: only a single example exists. A one-off piece, hand-signed by the Scottish actor on the tank, sold at auction to benefit UNICEF. This is a far cry from a mere marketing stunt with a gold sticker and three extra chrome screws. The tank sports a copper finish that contrasts sharply with the black and chrome of the rest of the machine, a treatment carried over to the center of the front fender and its brackets. The visual result is striking, almost baroque for a Bonneville usually so restrained in its attire.
Beneath this charitable livery, the mechanicals remain those of the standard Bonneville of the era. The 865 cc parallel twin produces 68 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 67.7 Nm of torque at 5,800 rpm. Nothing volcanic, but that's precisely the temperament expected from this type of machine. The steel double-cradle frame, the 41 mm telescopic fork, the twin rear shock absorbers with their 105 mm of travel, the single 310 mm front brake disc: all of this makes up an honest package, calibrated for relaxed enjoyment rather than outright performance. At 227 kg wet and with a seat height of 775 mm, it's an accessible motorcycle, even for smaller riders. The five-speed gearbox and chain final drive complete a deliberately simple setup, faithful to the neo-retro spirit Triumph has steadily cultivated since the Bonneville's rebirth.
The appeal of this edition obviously doesn't lie in the spec sheet. It stems from the convergence of an actor genuinely passionate about motorcycling and a brand that knows how to leverage its heritage without descending into parody. McGregor, unlike other celebrities posing on customs they never actually ride, has proven his commitment on tarmac and track alike. His filmed journeys with Charley Boorman played a significant role in reviving interest in long-distance motorcycle travel in the mid-2000s. Attaching his name to a Bonneville rather than a Tiger or a Rocket III was a shrewd choice: the Bonnie embodies motorcycling authenticity, the kind that speaks to purists and newcomers alike.
For those who dreamed of getting their hands on this collector's piece without success, Triumph offered a limited Belstaff edition that same year—more accessible but far less symbolically charged. The real question remains the value of such a machine. Its price doesn't appear on any manufacturer's price list since it was never sold in the conventional sense. Its market value depends solely on what a collector is willing to pay to own an 865 Bonneville signed by Obi-Wan Kenobi himself. And that, no price guide can quantify.
